86 n/a- very bad idle and running rich

my friend has a 86 n/a that idles like crap and is running rich. When the car is cold it wont hold a idle, it will just sputter and stall. After the car is warmed up it gets slightly better and will idle most of the time, but still idles rough and wants to die. The ECU is not throwing any codes and the compression is good. Other than the idle the car seems to run ok. Do you have any ideas on what the problem is? thanks.

- check idle setting
- tps setting
- timing setting

- cold/warm sounds like TB mod is done and cold start assist removed (or something wrong with him?)

yes you are correct, the TB mod is done and cold start assist removed.

also let me clarify, the car will sometimes idle normally when it is fully warmed up.

Mine does the same thing pretty much, but it is very irregular. I still have'nt figured out WTF is wrong. Compression, TPS, timing, all good. Moving on to the fuel system now, filter, injectors, etc....

add a ground from the battery neg. term. to the lead coil MOUNT

a 4 gauge ground.. see if it makes a difference..

it should.. if not, then you already have a solid ground.. it might not help the idle at first, but it SHOULD give you more power and remove the rich running..

large vacuum leak would make it idle funny.. im not positive though if it would make it run rich.. unless an electrical component is trying to compensate for the leak or something..

when you say that the ECU isn't giving you any codes--when are you checking it? The 86-88 ECUs don't store codes, so you will hafta check it while the engine is running.
