86 GXL Steering stuck in lock position.

Just recieved 86 GXL from relative. Steering is stuck in lock position. I believe from sitting so long it may have gotten stock or possible be broken. The ignition was changed onced many years ago due to theft before it was parked and the keys shoudl def be right. The door key works fine. TRied for hours, many pepople tried, tow truck driver and roatary friends. The actully ignition unit is a little lose. You can wiggle it back and forth just a lil bit, its not tight like all ignition are. Not sure if that could be a cause. If i can't get it lose i guess im goign to try adn remove those top lock nutz that hold it, hope it can be removed when steering locked and try to find a new with a key. Would it affect the fuel pump or any type of anti thef on the car? thanks everyone for your help.

Good luck.

More then likely - you've got to wiggle the wheel while trying to turn the key to get the steering free'd up. Its probably just jammed against the lock pin and thats making it tough.

If you decide its broken and attempt to bust the column - I hope you have a good set of chisels and alot of paitence. I've tried on an old D/D with a lost key (lousy puddle jumping ) to break-in and unlock the steering. Getting it running was easy - but the lock pin **especially if yours is jammed now** was a ROYAL pain in the *** to remove. Damn near had to sawzall the thing apart.

The long and the short - wiggle it, it should work. If you can't make it work and choose to go the long route - simply start unbolting the column assembly. It'll need to be changed afterwards anyways.

Yeah i have spent alot of time doing the wiggly thing. Not working, alot of peopel have tried. The actual unit you stick the key in is loose too and moves with the steering. But you can move the wheel to we have tried all directions. If not luck going to have to break down and take the pain.
