NC 86 fc really slow to start

ive got an 86 rx7 with an s4 13b, s5 rotors, minor bridgeport. it has a new optima yellowtop and a month old brand new(not reman.d) and it takes forever for my for to start. itll crank and sputter a little bit. then keep cranking and cranking and sometimes itll start in 30-45 seconds, doesnt matter the weather, but then sometimes it goes 2-5 minutes without starting, and when it does start it smokes like hell outta the exhaust(single converted) with a really strong fuel smell. any help would be great

sounds like you are flooding it and need to wire in a fuel pump switch. it's common on rebuilds to have this issue until the seals wear in a bit

need more info, like who built the engine, the setup and does it consume coolant.

flooding issues generally don't result in tons of smoke, burning coolant and oil does though. coolant in the CC will cause very difficult starting so maybe a test of the coolant seals is in order with a pressure tester first. bridges can also compromise the irons from the other side of the coolant seals and allow coolant to push into the engine if a wall fails inside the intake runner. i had one bridged engine fail in this manner, giving symptoms of a bad coolant seal wall, just not your typical failure from the other side.

happens when your coolant seals are bad,but youd know if they were due to your over flow tank, well, overflowing

I had an s5 vert that did this. Coolant leaks into the housings after you shut it down and floods the engine over night from the built up coolant system pressure. Smell you coolant. If it smells like exhaust its your coolant seals. It smells like fuel because the computer is pumping in fuel while it cranks to start, but obviously since its flooded with coolant the A/F ratio is way off and just snowballs. Youll soon notice your reservoir boiling onto the ground and a constant low coolant buzzer.

bad coolant seals won't always overpressurize the cooling system, nor push coolant out the reservoir..

It depends on where the failure is located I guess. Coolant seals either suck coolant in or blow exhaust air into the coolant system right?

It can't be fuel smoke. It would be impossible to start with the amount of fuel needed to cause a huge smoke screen.

It could oil though. Control rings or sticky side seals?

What kind of spark plugs are your running? What is your timing set at?

to be honest with you idk what my timing is set at. so if my coolant seals are bad does the motor need to come out for that? im brand new to rotaries, especially when it comes to troubleshooting stuff

Hell, given the info in the original post, I'd suspect the fuel system before coolant seals.

Is the pump working properly, are the filters clean and what shape are the injectors in?

BTW, IMO, (wow! double acronyms...I'm so internet savvy) the "fuel cut switch" is just a bandaid, not a solution.
Installing one is tantamount to admitting that you have a problem but are too lazy to fix it.

I imagine they ported the eyebrows a little to close to the water seal.

Man what a drag that would be

But hey, Screamin FC, what kind of engine management are you using? did you just bridgeport the motor, throw bigger injectors on it, and drive it? Maybe the stock computer is having difficulty ******* with everything?

water seal failure requires rebuild, so make sure its them before pulling apart the engine!

Have you checked your spark plugs? When is the last time you replaced them?

Maybe your coolant temp sensor is bad. If it's unplugged on an s5 you have to floor the gas pedal to start it, then it smokes for a bit from the rich fuel mixture. Make sure its getting good signal at the ECU pin. Swap it with a new one just because they're cheap and available at any parts store.
