Unhappy 86 - engine wont start ????

I have an 86 non turbo. It has turned over in the past month - the last time it turned over i was backing it out of the drive way and it stalled. Now it will only spin over but it seems like it isnt getting fire. I checked the spark plugs and they are firing. i do smell gas - so it is getting gas to the carb. My next thought was timing? but i think i understand that there is no certain way to adjust the timing rather than to only advance the timing.

Like i said the engine is spinning over just not firing enough to actually start.

It truly hasnt been driven in a year or two. I recently bought it from a guy who had no idea about rotaries - and didnt want to fool with it.

any ideas would be truly helpful.

thanks

What kind of carb is it? Also, if you smell fuel, its flooded. Search for unflooding procedure. And I dont kno where you heard that timing BS, but its not true.

It's flooded. Remove the two lower plugs and spin the engine for ten or fifteen seconds. Before doing that, remove the EGI INJ fuse in the engine fuse box. After having spun the engine as above, reinstall the sparkplugs. Reinstall the fuse, and try to start the engine. IF it starts, good. If not write back and tell us what happened. Did it cough at least once?

Try not to use the word carb if this is a purely stock engine. It should be a fuel injected engine with a throttle body. Unless someone has put a carb on it. You might want to clear that up for us.

it is a stock fuel injection - no obvious mods. I will try the removal of the spark plugs and give that a go.

it has coughed once or twice - if you mean that the engine tries to start - but of the 15 - 20 mins i tried it today there was no coughing.

ill keep this posted for ya.

ps thanks.

Cool

i removed the two bottom spark plugs and the fuse in the fuse box - turned it over - and it did cough twice. but that was it.

i did find a few places on line that talked about de--flooding the rx7 - it said that unfortunately it is a problem with 86 abd up when the engine isnt allowed to reach its normal running temp. another places suggested that i remove all 4 spark plugs and then use a baster and insert transmission fluid into the spark plug holes...

any ideas?

sincerely,

rotary with a cough

Go look at www.rotaryresurrection.com and find their un-flooding procedure. It's very thorough and works perfectly. I had EXACTLY your problem about a month ago.

GL!

Unhappy ya know - i think it fixed it - but...

I tried the normal - take out the bottom plugs - unplug the enj fuse - turn it over for 5 seconds - after blowing all the access out - replaced the plugs. !! and get this the guy i bought this car from - granted it hasnt ran very much sice then - but had 3 different spark plugs in there - the leading plug was on the top - the trailing was on the botton - and there were two totally different sparklugs in the other holes. - ok --- so now she fires up and purrs like a kitten and all the smoke has cleared. now she is draiining my battery like crazy - must be the alternator huh? or is there any known - shorts or crazy grounds that has caused this on other rx7s?

just asking.
