86-88 vs 89-91 crank[esentric]pulley...

ok,here is the deal.i'm sorta posting this here to see if someone can help me out,i'm gonna call my enginebuilder tomorrow, hopefully he can helpbut he is closed today[memorial day],and i'm a bit concerned about this.i have a 87'n/a,just got my engine redone,i had them put in 89+rotors,along with counterweights etc.my problem is,when i went to reinstall my esentric shaft pulley[the one with the timming marks on it]the bolt holes did not line up,the little punch mark on the puley did not at all line up with the crank/esentric,and,using the tdc locating method described in some other threads here,i was nowhere close to tdc,no matter how i tryed to fudge the pulley to still use the existing hole.can anybody give me a definative answer here,i'm hoping/assuming that i need a pulley from a 89+....does this seem right?i dont really know where exactely the front counterweight is located at,and how that would play into wich "front" piece gets used[whatever it is that sticks out of the front housing, the esentic shaft or something that bolts to the end of it]does this all make any sense?thanks in advance!!
david
PS:anybody got a 89+ pulley for sale?

A few things here...if they used 89+ rotors they had better have used the 89+ flywheel and front counterweight. IF not the thing will vibrate. They are weighted different. The weight in the rear is IN the flywheel itself, the weight in the front is inside the front cover.

Assuming all that is square, here we go.

There is a large 19mm bolt in the front of your shaft, right? IT holds on a pulley sprocket, or so I call it. The round piece with 4 holes in it. That piece comes off teh shaft. Follow me so far? Ok, you need to know if they used the pulley sprocket from the 89+, or the 86-8. You also need to know if they used rotor housings from an 86-8, or an 89+. The spark plug holes in the rotor housings are placed a bit differently, affecting the timing.

So, if you have 86-8 housings, Id stick with the 86-8 pulley setup, because you'll want to keep teh spark timing the same. Just because the 89+ rotors are higher compression adn lighter weight, they should be in the same position for timing(TDC, etc.) Follow me? Same if they used 89+ housings, Id use the 89+ pulley.

Here's where Im in the gray. I dont know if those pulley sprockets and pulley plates are drilled in different patterns from 86-8 and 89-91. There are 4 holes, drilled offset so there is only one way to mount them. I dont know if they changed this in 89 or not, so the pulley sprockets may in fact be the same, may be different. The pulleys may have the same bolt pattern on them, or not. I dont know. They DO have different timing marks on them, as I mentioned above.

Id talk with the engine builder and find out what exactly you have, and get all the parts together and identify what is what, adn figure out from there what you need.

thanks hypntyz
yes, they did use a matching 89+ front counterweight, and i have a lightweight flywheel on its way with the proper rear counterweight.what your saying makes perfect sense.do you have any idea how much different the rotor housings are?this is the first i had heard of this.anyhow,i'm gonna give'em a call tomorrow.
