The 7 is Dying! Help me!

So I fired on the car, and it warmed up and I threw it on drive drove off. Not even 20 feet when under the radio, like where the tranny sits, it sounded like something fell and i ran over it or something like that.....something was scraping!

The whole car was shaking and then cut off! Tried to turn it back on and it turned on a few times but the only way it stayed on was when i held the gas down but then as i reving the car, i got to 4 grand and it did the same thing..sounded liek something was scraping and died.

I checked behind me for fluids on the ground, nothing. Looked under the car, couldnt tell anything had happened. Under the hood, looks liek all my belts are there. I left the car in a parking lot, please tell me what happened!

1987 GXL A/T

Thanks, Prodigy

Was you reving the engine cold?

If it was cold, I would bet either carbon stuck in the Apex seal and that the noise of the seal/s scraping on the housings.

Just a guess!

Good luck.

You have "drive" on your standard tranny?

I'm trying to get a clear picture so we can figure it out:
Not even 20 feet when under the radio, like where the tranny sits, it sounded like something fell and i ran over it or something like that.....something was scraping!
My wild stab in the dark: something is jammed in the auto tranny (torque converter) and it won't let the motor spin?? That's why i ask questions so I don't give a dumbass guess. Let's wait for more details.

the thing is that most people here want a good answer without giving decent information. Here is one of my posts as an example of how I think questions should be posed:

https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...17&postcount=1

From the get-go you have all the details, what I did to help MYSELF and what my CURRENT problem IS. Also notice the thread title. Help us help you.

I think with a little help we can beat the noobs into doing this more often. Tough love suck, for you, but it works.

Could be an apex seal shattered and the noise it made just sounded like it came from under the radio.

Sounds like apex carnage to me. That's how mine sounded. The most awful thing you don't want to hear while driving your 7...

Hey so I'm eating lunch and I start browsing the rx7club forums, then I go back to my lunch and my 2nd chopstick isn't there. I think maybe I dropped it, but I don't see it on the floor. Where is it?

I know it's hard to see what's going on, but please look around, experiment and post more details if you want people to help you.

Nope, not there. I checked deep too.

Prodigy: Put your car in neutral, start it. If it sounds bad turn it off. If it sounds fine rev it a bit and then see how it sounds. Then tell us what happens. That will at least tell us whether it's the engine or the drivetrain.

Make sure the engine has good compression before you go to all the trouble. You can spend 15 bucks on a piston compression tester and get a good idea on the state of the engine.
