6k hesitation

I was driving around w/ a couple of my friends today...(following a MR2 turbo) anyways we were on a nice backroad that we both new and he went WOT and i did the same...I was in first and around 6.5k rpm its like it didnt want to rev any higher...I tried the same thing in 2nd and around the same rpm it did the same thing, and also in 3rd. The only thing I could think of would be that my cats are so clogged b/c i have 118k on my car that its causing too much back pressure...anyone have any other ideas?

I **** you not I just bought the same year and color car, GXL, and it has the same problem. Not all the time, but occasionally when I go WOT it'll happen.

The 2ndaries kick in a 4.5k not 6.5k right?

Sometimes it just seems like it's falling off power when you're running with another car.
I know the feeling - you always want more power.

But, you better check if it's running lean..

I got the same on a 91.

Not to sound like a noob, but how do we check the lean-ness?? TPS?? A/F ratio??

Mine also May be clogged exhaust. I've got headers and a presilencer, but the presilencer and the catback have both gotten wet.

That exhaust setup should never cause you any problems.

The TPS signal has two functions:
1) tell the ECU the throttle is closed so knows to idle.
2) tell the ECU you're cruising at light throttle so it can go to closed loop fuel control.

A cheap digital voltmeter clipped on the oxygen sensor wire (at the ECU) will tell if you're rich, lean, or closed loop.

I've got plenty of power from 3k-6.5k, just up high, The rpms climb slower and seems like it takes forever to get to 8k. I've also got real rough idle until it is warm. so I need to adjust my TPS anyway, but haven't learned how yet.

What numbers am I to compare it to? what should the voltmeter read at a good idle or A/F ratio?

Thanks for the help, I've seen many other reporting this problem and hope I'm not hijacking the ruthless one's thread..

I have the same 6000 thing but it just started for some reason. It was at 3000 but it went away and now 6000. I have the bonez race pipe with presilencer and borla cat backs. My exhaust is bran new so its free of build up. Im thinking maby it does have something to do with running lean because my ECU was remapped to slightly lean the fuel. Maby I was already running lean and it just got leaner. I dont know what causes engine's to run lean thought so its just a thought. By the way the only thing I have done sense it was a 3000 prob was change the tranny fluid and put water wetter in. Made a big difference by the way my car is running alot faster than before. I have a 87 by the way and my ports should be working but havent made sure.
