6 ports STILL not working!

I took the damn intake apart and pulled the sleeves out... Cleaned the hell out of everything-- new gaskets. I even did some mild porting. The 5+6 ports moved freely by hand, but they don't open-up while driving. I know because I have wired them open and know how it should feel.

The only thing I can think of that may be an issue are my gutted cats. I drive an '86, and I still am running my air pump, ACV, etc...

Why won't these things actuate? Do teh actuators go bad? Is there any way to test them?

When you gutted the cats, did a little piece of pipe in the shape of a J fall out? The 6P pick-up curves into the cat so it faces the direction of exhaust flow. If it broke off flush with the cat wall, then no 6p.

The best thing to do is put a guage on the split air pipe and drive around. (I used an old boost guage) Unlless you see 2.5 psi (I think) the ports wont open. If you have the pressure, then you know its something to do with the actuator.

Good Luck

Test the Actuators yourself. Take It off and depress the rod and see If It Is holding pressure. Mine feel like they are brand new, In terms of the pressure It holds. Do you have any other mods done to your exhaust? The gutted cat would be enough to not cause your Actuators to depress due to the lack of a back pressure. You could customize your Auxilliary Ports to open on demand with a RPM Switch, EGR Solenoid and a 12v Air Compressor. PM If you are Interested.

I think I will do the electronic actuation, but I will make my own system. I'm gonna try to retrofit some vacuum actuators (found on split port Ford engines) and use a vacuum switch and a MSD RPM switch-- I've got experience with that setup on my other car, so I think that's the way I'll go.

Thanks anyways, guys.

what cars are these in?i have been trying to figuere out a way to use vacuum myself, but was unaware of these particular actuators-they produce enough pull?i'm actually gonna use exhaust backpressure actuated aux.ports[my header has the mazdatrix p/u tube],but i need something for the vdi,i allready have a rpm switch to operate a solenoid.thanks

The actuators are supposed to work @ 3800 RPMs...

V6 F-150's and (some) late model V6 Mustangs have vacuum solenoids (actuators). These cars have split-port intakes.

I transplanted a 4.2L V6 into my T-Bird (aka Pride and Joy) and had to find a way to activate my IMRCs (Intake Manifold Runner controls). Basically, there are 12 runners (2 per cyl) and half are closed until about 3200 RPMs-- when they should open. Since my car didn't have provisions for that, I had to use an MSD switch and a vacuum switch to activate the IMRC solenoids. It's really simple, really. The only problem will be fitting the actuators on our 13Bs... Once that is completed, it will be the easiest way to make our 5+6 ports work.

Here are a couple of old pics of the T-Bird in case anyone cares...

where is the vacuum actuator located at?is that it on top of the manifold behind the tb?
this sounds good-might be the answer to my problem...

The actuators are actually not visible with the engine in-- they are at the back of the lower intake- so it's covered by the cowl/wiper shroud thing. They look alot like the actuators in our cars-- fitting them should not be too tough.

When I gutted my precats my 6 ports quit working. My solution was to buy the bonez cat and presilencer.

T-bird looks like a lot of money and work went into it. Good job.

How much did the hood ornimate in the last picture cost ya? =)

I've heard on this forum that the mufflers alone, with a straight pipe no cat's, will open up the Auxilliary Ports. Total bull ****. Can't remember who theorized that. It's not worthy of searching.
