5th and 6th Port
hey i have an 86 GXL. how do i know if the ports are opening or working.
i was looking around the exhaust manifold, and i see the tube that comes from the cat. and theres this rubber hose that connects to it and this other small hose. im looking at it and the big hose turns into the back of the engine, the firewall, and its cut off, it doesnt connect to anything at all.
wats the 5th and 6th port feel like? i revved the engine to see if the actuators move but they dont.
is it common that some ppl disconnect the ports?

you should feel mor and more power as the rpms go up. the best way to figure out if they are working is to put some axle grease on the actuator arms and go redline a couple times and see if it rubbed the grease. other than that, do a search. this is asked all the time

Unless you have a LOAD on the engine (which you can't do sitting in the driveway), you will not be able to open the ports at any rpm on a STOCK aux port system...
There are several ways to rig up an effective aux port actuation system- search...

one hose. it doesnt lead anywhere... it hides behind the engine, between the firewall.

here is a picture. the red=the hose which is cut. what does this hose usually go too?
also ive been wondering, circled blue; what are these? what are they for/from?

welp lets see, the blue circles you have here are suppose to be your A/C lines going to the front of your car. The hose your talking about here in the red, is suppose to connect to the back of the engine about right where(the hose) ends.

push the 5th and 6 port rods into the actuators to check to make sure they arent stuck.
if they move freely without much resistance, they are probably working fine.
Otherwise.. they arent

The hose is part of the split air pipe. It delivers fresh air to the catalytic converter to help it burn any unburned hydrocarbons. It connects to the nipple on the lower intake manifold which receives its air from the Air Control Valve (ACV) located between the two actuators in question. Air is supplied to the cat via this pipe under certian conditions such as moderate load. The nipple is located a little bit lower than where you have your hose routed in your photo. It sits just inboard of the brake vacuum line shown in the photo.
With the engine cold, stick your hand between the firewall and lower intake manifold. You should be able to feel it. Reattach it and use a hose clamp. The other end of the hose connects to a check valve that prevents exhaust from blowing back into the engine. I would be suprised to hear that you would be able to pass emissions with the split air hose disconnected. Furthermore I would not be suprised if your catalytic converter was fouled.
As far as checking out the actuators, the suggestions in the previous posts are valid.
First push the actuator in with your finger. If that works then do the grease trick.
My actuators were stuck but a little Marvel Mystery Oil helped free them up. If they are stuck and a little lube does not help the next thing you may want to do is to take off the actuator and determine if the problem is the actuator or the port valve (the thing the actuator is moving). Be careful as there is a gasket between the LIM and actuator.
Sorry to see that some butcher attacked your AC (No offense to any butchers out there).
