5K RPM strangetudes / Sticky MOP... ?
alright, so im driving..
i had the car in 2nd gear (after it was up and running at op temp) and decided to hit the redline after coming around a corner. i did so (7200 rpm to be exact), and shifted into 3rd.
i was just about to enter a 60kmph zone, so i thought "whoop - better slow down" so, with it in gear (3rd) i let off the gas and coasted, just getting ready to catch 4th for a better 'roll' gear... just before the shift - BILLLOWING smoke (burnt oil i assume - its bluish)..
i think hmm.. ****! sideseals.. BUT THATS NOT ALL. this is where my sticky MOP question comes from.
after driving around a while again, going easy, i decided to see if it was a fluke or if it would happen again if i tried.
i tried - same deal. this time i noticed that the smoke started billowing at 5k rpm, AND AND!!!! (my car has no cats to catch any backfire) there was the LOUDEST pop (sounded like a gunshot, only more 'snappy'). i also noticed this time around that when it gets to 5k rpm while coasting, it doesnt drop rpm so easy.. its as if i start to feather the throttle a tad.. very very very small tad, until that POP happened.
well thinking the worst, i checked my compression when i got to my desination (poor mans way, but its still effective). the compression IS strong. i inspected my exhaust - its all ok. everything seemed normal.. so.. wtf!
oh yes, i forgot the next part i was going to say. the reason i thought of a stick MOP is because i tried the test a THIRD time, but THIS time, i did not go past 6800 rpm. exact same procedure, just didnt reach redline in 2nd -> coast in 3rd. No smoke. No pop. All is well.
im vaguely familiar with the MOP, i know there is an arm attached to the throttle or something? could this be sticking when i am WOT? causing the smoke? possibly the pop?
i got a feeling (duh) the pop is excess fuel dumped into the exhaust, and it igniting.. (hello flames).
i have been told that after my cats were removed i have spit some flames.. kinda neat , but, thats NOT why i removed the cats..
well sorry for my disorganised post.. lol..
comments anyone?
btw - when removeing (and cleaning) my spark plugs to do the compression test, they looked ok, but were a tad orange.. mechanic at work said theyre just a tad 'brunt'.. this still applies even with a pistonless engine?
thanks guys..
