5500 RPM buzzer followed by loss of power

At 5500 RPM in any gear, a buzzer goes off, and the car loses a lot of power, like it's pulling a ton of timing. Up until that point, it will run like a bat out of hell. Both boost and AFR's are the same after 5500 as they are before. ~10 pounds and ~12.3 AFR. Any ideas what would cause this? Timing too advanced maybe?

Well just my 2 cents, but check your oil and cooler lines. see if either leaks at around those rpms. The buzzer going off makes me think an oil/coolant line busted, since my buzzer went crazy when I blew an oil line. good luck

^^^ yeah, the buzzer is supposed to go off for red line, low coolant, and oil loss (or maybe pressure loss, I'm not sure, but neither is good). it IS possible your tachometer is incorrect, I've heard of that happening, but I'd say check the simple and critical stuff first.

Do you have a free-flowing exhaust with your turbo?

My car was buzzing at about those speeds in second gear during an autocross this weekend and I did not see any lights to say what it was. I was also getting some complete power loss like I did before I change the fuel pump pick-up screen filter.

I have a 1991 convertible NA and it has an oil leak but I don't think it is that bad.

This exact same thing happened to me once the ignition coils had about an inch of corrosion around them due to a short.... check the voltage and amperage coming out of your coils... Finally someone else gets one of those wonky problems that seem to plague only me...

Were you running low on gas? I had the same symptoms as I was cornering hard on a track with very little gas in the tank.

most likely loss in oil pressure, my buzzer has gone of when my oil level is a bit low, just try putting more oil the motor and try that.

I was around empty but I have run with the gauge past Empty before and maybe noticed it once.

The problem is how does low gas relate to the buzzer going off and how does low oil pressure result in loss of power?

I don't think my RX-7 is a lemon, that is just how they built them.

oh, i never got the oil pressure buzzer, i just received a nice fat power loss as i was getting back on the power. Needless to say I pulled into the pits quite quickly after that.
