5 lug conversion? Bigger Breaks?
5 lug conversion? Bigger Breaks?
I have an '86 with 4 lugs. What are my options to convert it to 5 lug? What about bigger brakes? I am new to the RX7 world, so I need someone to point me in the right direction. Thanks!

I bet the RX7 brakes are better than 240 ones anyways. Then you factor in the fabrication, and its a non-issue. The money would be better spent on a big brake upgrade thats FC specific.

Maybe they were Skyline or even 300z calipers? I doubt they were 240 calipers. FC calipers are good enough for most people. Anyways, a 5 lug swap will get you bigger and better STOCK RX-7 brakes.

Anyways, since I can't understand too much Japanese, I was wondering if anyone had info. Hopefully they are 300ZX brakes and bolt right on. It'll be nice to have big brakes that were originally meant to slow a 3600lbs car...
I did the five lug swap. I used hubs, rotors, and calipers from a friend's junked GXL (86-88). I didn't want to swap off my four lug hubs because they worked fine and the brakes were good enough, and better than a lot of cars already, but I wanted to use five lug wheels so I went ahead and did the swap.
I was concerned about the larger brakes and five lug hubs wieghing more, but the four piston front calipers turned out to be made of aluminum, instead of cast iron like the four lug calipers, so the all-up weight of the five lug front hub / brake combination was the same as the four lug hub combination. The rear brakes looked pretty identical in size and shape. Even the rear calipers looked the same and had identical brake pads to the four lug ones.
It was a great mod. The car stops harder than before and I got to use some very light and cheap 91 coupe five star 15x6 wheels, which look better than the base model wheels in my opinion.
