4 to 5 lug rear end question

I am in the midst of doing my 5 lug swap, I am having some difficulty finding an "NA" rear end for the car so I have a question since I have not been able to locate a thread with an answer.

I have a friend with a turbo 2 sub frame he is looking to sell. Can I drop the whole subframe in? I know with a Turbo 2 transmission, the drive shaft is shorter. Is there a different hole pattern?

Basically I have an s4 NA engine, transmission, driveshaft. I want to put a turbo pumpkin in the rear. Will this work??

in order to use the turbo pumpkin with a na transmission you will need a custom driveshaft. Mazdatrix sells one for a little under 300$.

Unless your fc didn't have a rear end in it, then the original rear end will fit ALL nonturbo axles. There is nothing special about the 4lug and 5lug rear ends UNLESS its a turbo rear end, and all turbo rear ends were 5 lug anyway (unless someone was bonkers enough to swap to 4 lug)

But any nonturbo(as in did not come in a TII) rear end will be the same, unless its a 3.90 or 4.30, in which case its a gearing dispute.

no problem. I went through the same 4 lug to 5 lug conversion a few years ago on my first fc. The rear hubs are splined the same between NA and TII, 4 lug and non, meaning that you can get the donor parts from any model, doesnt have to series specific either last I checked.

The only differance in the rear end is the turbo axles have a differant bolt spacing where they attach to the turbo diff. So if you swapped to a turbo rear end you'd also need the halfshafts as well as the driveshaft, and if you're going that far you can get a turbo trans/flywheel/start/clutch all for probably cheaper than the mazdatrix adapter driveshaft (I gave 450 for all of my turbo swap components.)

Good luck with the endeavor.

wait so maybe it would work... I could take the pumpkin and drive shafts from my 4 lug, and put that into the 5 lug subframe? that is the way youre making it sound.

all fc subframes are the same.

any fc diff can be put into any fc subframe & car.

the only problem is the axels and driveshaft. the axels need to match the diff. the driveshaft needs to match the transmission and the diff.

the hubs have nothing to do with the axels, driveshaft, diff, or subframe.

possibly.

Do you currently have a rear differential in the car, and is the car turbo or non?

If the car is nonturbo, and has a rear diff already in it, all you need is the rear hub assemblies to do the 5 lug swap.

If the car is nonturbo, and has no rear diff at all, then yes the 4lug rear diff will bolt in fine with the original nonturbo driveshaft.
