3rd gear problem.
3rd gear problem.
Well, I went to the drag strip yesterday and found one little, but annoying problem. The third gear wont go in at WOT.
When normaly driving around on the streets, 3rd gear goes in perfect, just like if it was new. But when I'm racing and shift from 2nd to 3rd at 7000rpm, it just wont go in unless I do it very slowly and gentle. But from 1st to second, WHAM!, no problem, same thing from 3rd to 4th. The car wont allow me to do that from 2nd to 3rd.
Any idea why?

XRobber is correct. MT-90 is fantastic stuff for your tranny. Check out this link:

It was enough to make me switch.

I kinda have that problem too, not when I'm shifting, but down shifting, from 4th to 3rd, if i do it kinda quick, don't even need to be at high rpm
If, let's say I'm at 4k rpm in 4th, and i want to down shift to slowdown, press in the clutch, bring it in 3rd, it will grind until the rpm goes to idle speed... and even then it goes in in a weird way. My brother told me(he had the car before me) I can either wait for the rpm to go down to the idle, or rev up 1k higher than it was in 4th, and it would go in, I haven't tried that one yet tho, I just usually brake more and down shift in 2nd instead when im slow enough for that gear.
Would that oil (Redline MT-90) help that problem?

First and foremost... why on earth do people insist on rushing a gear change? When you change up a gear when racing, trying to cram it in is an awful way to do things. Shifting should be a brisk, fluid motion...not a panic attack.
How old are your shifter bushings? Are there even anything left of your shifter bushings?
The FC gearbox is notchy, that's just the way it is.

I don't rush it at all... It happens sometime really near to the idle, I'd have to wait a few seconds before being able to put it in
I know I have to change some bushing in the shifter as it is pretty loose in neutral

Hmmm, I might try this. I am not getting too many scratches, only when down shifting into second gear. Not quick, just doing it. Sometimes it happens, others it doesn't. Plus, I'm sure it needs changed anyway.
No no....22.95$ a quart. I'm in Canada...so they can screw me over like they want, not many speed shops hold that brand.
Anyhow, think of it this way:
Redline oil = 22.95$
2 of them = 45.90$
Bought 4 because of you, even though I only needed 2 = 91.80$
Being able to shift in 3rd gear at WOT = Priceless (remians to be seen)

You can also check out the FSMs as I am sure they have that info.

Do yourself a favor and get a Haynes manual if you don't have one. They are indispensable. You will be able to answer many questions for yourself with it, and its good for simply flipping through and getting familiar with other stuff.
I wasn't trying to be an ***, just saying if you don't have one you really should get one.
