3500 RPM max in any gear

My 87 RX7 non turbo had charging problems. The battery would discharge over nite. A new alternator fixed that, but the new alternator only put out 10v, and would not keep the battery charged. I corrected that with another alternator. While test driving one day, the car was running good, (really good) but then something happened that would not let the car have normal acceleration after 3500 RPMs. Runs fine up to 3500 rpms in any gear, but goes flat after that. Any help.

Your secondaries sound like they're not firing... Does it die about 3800 Rpms? That's when the secondaries come on. Check the connection to your trailing Top plugs, and the plug wires are tightly connected in your secondary ignitor box... Hope that helps, it did for me =P

I had a similar problem with going flat at 3500 or so. Found I'd left the leading coil unplugged when I fabricated a dedicated ground on it. After that, it runs great!

Could be a couple of things- clogged cat, secondary injectors, or sensor related...

How's your gas mileage, compared to when it was running right?

My guess is its the secondaries, which would either be a loose plug (lots of maintenance in that general area), or a malfunctioning presure sensor.

I'm guessing it's the MAS (mass airflow sensor).

Quit guessing, start troubleshooting...

Clogged cat(s)- horrendous gas mileage, abnormally hot exhaust

Secondary injectors not coming on- easy enough to figure out from reading out the ECU while driving

Boost sensor problem- it'll throw a code, or, easy enough to figure out from reading the ECU while driving

MAF- may throw a code, easy enough to figure out..ECU.. you know the drill...

Leading coils- easy enough with a timing light, or reading the ECU blah blah blah...
