2nd gen compared with VR6

hey guys, just wondering how my brothers '98 VW GTI VR6 compares to the NA and T2. we have an intake, chip, and catback and ran a 14.8 @ 95 mph with a 2.3 60' time.

any of you guys ever raced one of these?

T2 with basic mods like intake and exhaust will destroy a vr6 jetta. intake, chuip, and catback only gets a vr6 gti to 14.8et? with intake and downpipe and catback you can probably get a T2 to around 14 flat. my advice is to spend about 3 grand on a decent T2, then spend about 500-700 bucks on intake, downpipe, catback and destroy your brother's gti. (make sure you get a fuel pump or something to support that 10 or so lbs of boost that those mods will bump you up to)

I raced a newer vr6 up a huge hill 2 months or so ago from 100km/h to around 180km/h (110mph?) 4th gear pull. and it was pretty even. but he had a totaly striped interior and a 50 shot it ran a 13.9

My friend has one of those and he is trying to sell it. I rode in it, modded with intake and exhaust, and it would probably beat a stock NA no problem, but a fairly modded NA would run right with it. A stock t2 would edge it out, and a modded t2 will have no problems.

THe damn thing does sound nice at about 5000rpms though!

I had a chance to run with a modded 00' Jetta VR6 a few days ago in the RAIN.

It had at least a cat-back.
We launched from a dead-stop.
He spun like crazy and so did I. However, I caught traction first and hole shot him. 1 car after first gear. No one gained in 2nd, then I gained another 1/2 car in third.

Did it again in the next light and the results were the same.

It was a pretty good run.

mods = racepipe + catback + safc + pineapple sleeves + cone intake

I thought GTi's were a lot faster.

My dad (02' GTi) has taken modded VR4's in his by quite a bit... crazy.

*Used to have a vr6 Corrado*

They are fast cars, and a blast to drive, only reason I got away from it was because I wanted my rx7, rwd, rotary....

That and I'm too poor to work on those damn cars. The timing chain tends to break and bend valves... It's common on the OBD I or II engines from 92-98. It's the tiniest little v6 with the sharpest v angle out there, and it's transversely mounted, quite a feat for VW... At least they are really proud of it for some reason. I've seen them way modded out running a twin turbo setup and bangin' out 600 hp on a modified quattro setup, EIP owns that one. When you start dropping them into the A2 body style, cars weighing 2200lbs getting some serious hp and low down tourque. A friend of mine has an A2 gti with a vr6 swap with BPU, i/e/h and it's wicked fast. Never raced him tho.

Rotaries have warped my concept of all other engines, so if i'm wrong here fee free to correct me.

VWs are nice cars. I want to buy one soon. I spend lots of time on the VWVortex. The VR6 is a pretty good engine, but the 20V 1.8 rules. With a chip and turbo pipe you can be making 200 hp. The tunability is amazing. Too bad it didn't come in the MK3, which is the body style I like.

My brother passed up purchasing a mint-condition, black 88 Turbo II with only 49K original miles in favor of a black/black 95 Jetta VR6 GLX. The Jetta drives great, but since I've been driving turbocharged cars almost exclusively for the past 1.5 years, my concept of acceleration has been slightly warped. Either way, the Jetta feels pretty fast and handles wonderfully. What's great about this car, is that my brother is now into modifying his car a bit. A Neuspeed intake, chip and a few other goodies are on their way right now. Now I'm just trying to get him into autocrossing.

I know a lot of people with VWs (and I used to hang out at VWVortex a lot, but now its ghey). Anyway, the VR6 will eat any NA RX7. Stock to stock, the 1.8t would be a good match for the NA. I think the turbo II would eat both.

In the defence of the VW, The VR6 motor is a work horse. For those of you that don't know about them, they make about 175hp stock(Real numbers) but make close to 300 ftlbs of torque. In a GTI there good for a mid 15 totally stock. But I have read more that one article on how strong those motors are. For example: I read an article were a totally stock VR6 was equipped with a Turbonics T04 ran up to 18psi. This motor made over 500hp and over 750ftlbs.....on a stock N/A motor with high compression. They gave this motor two full weeks of hell in a Corrado with numerous trips to the strip. From what was written this motor was shattering half-shafts like toothpicks. Well after the two weeks were up the pulled the motor and took it apart all the way down and every part was perfect and every bearing was still in factory spec. conditon.

Is a T2 Rx-7 faster than a VR6 anything, Id say yes. But pump 18psi into both and see which one brakes first.

Aye to that bit about breaking half shafts. Custom made shafts won't even stand up verylong. At 1g/pair it's hardly something to replace every other month.

300 lbs torque... uh, No. try under 200lbs torque on a stock vr.

300lbs/ft?

hahaha
oh man, i sure hope that's a typo

in either case, the vr6 is a fun car to drive, my sis has an 01 gti vr6.. doesnt rev to high, but a lot of useable power ..

not as smooth as my FC in the high revs (i drive an NA) though..

i'm sure stock for stock, vr6 > FC

however, modded to modded? i dunno about that. i'll have to race my sisters car soon

she has a 2.5" supersprint catback right now and it just sounds soo badass. .. the vr6 sound is as nice as my rotary.. okay, maybe not that nice ..

you are on crack man. last i checked, the older vr6 (not the one in the new jeta GLI that has 200hp) has 172 hp and 173 torque(not exactly sure, but the hp and torque are almost the same). that would be a very very awkward engine that makes 172hp and 300 torque, unless its a diesel or something.

Didnt read through all the other posts...but heres my 2 cents

Knew a guy with a turbo GTI VR6, he was faster than a 220whp 89 T2

BUT

I also knew a guy with an NA VR6 which he had weight reduced a lot and it was as fast as ( if not faster ) the turbo one.

definately a no on the 300 ft./lbs and 750 ft/lbs. i'd like to see a dyno sheet on that. my brother used to have (wrecked it one night) a 2000 jetta vr6 with intake, exhaust, chip, 75-90 variable shot nos, and full suspension and it was pretty quick. well after he wrecked it and got a 3rd gen and put 3" turbo back exhuast on it, there's no looking back. i love the torque of the vw, but big power is expensive in those cars. from a tuner standpoint, the 1.8t is a better engine and has lots of potential for less money, though.

Sorry. Typo on the 300 it was supposed to be 200. Not a typo on the 750, but like I wrote before this was a Mag. artical that I read, not from personal experience.
