2k miles and blew the at tranny! - and q's for the auto-5spd swappers

Well guys, its been about a month and a half since I did the automatic tranny swap. Its needless to say that the streetport and various mods to me car (even though not many) are simply too many for an automatic transmission. Yesturday she slipped out of third into 2nd and I've found that 2nd gear is totaly gone. She just revs up until she hits the 1st gear and pulls whats left of first gear at a high rpm. To be honest, I expected this tranny to go pretty quick, but not this quick!! This is the second transmission in 6months/4000mi after the streetport. The stock NA Auto just can't handle it. I highly doubt my car has more than 130-150hp, but even that has eaten the second tranny.

Moral of the story: Streetports are not meant for an auto! lol, I knew that and had plans for the mt swap, just didn't have all the driveline parts yet and had a deal on an auto tranny so got it to make it a driver for awhile.

Anyway guys, now I won't be needing any more help with an auto to auto swap, but will be reading up on the auto to manual swap.

Anyone know if I should be looking at a TII manual tranny or should the N/A manual hold out ok? I've read that I would need the counter-wheights from whichever tranny I use (thats expected though.) Also would use of a TII tranny require a TII driveshaft? Are the two interchangeable.

I expect to stick with my stock rearend for right now.

Thanks everyone.

I've got everything you need for a 5speed N/a swap, tranny, driveshaft, clutch, flywheel, clutch pedals & hydraulics. The N/A tranny will hold up fine to a streetport w/ mods. Also, the driveshafts aren't interchangable, they're different lengths. But, there's a problem there because the flanges on the differential don't match up between the N/A and turbo, some people drill their turbo flanges out so they fit the N/A flange, but that's a bit scary

Just replied. It's a pretty straightforward swap, the hardest part is figure out how to rig up the mount, I just used angle iron like Landers mentioned on his site, and it's worked fine for me.

Yup, I actually got a chance to ask him about that and he said even the mount is pretty straightforward if you get a chance to read his website. I have to give him credit, his site is very informative. The use of that and the fact that I am now *very* familiar with the underside of my car (from the last tranny swap [breaking bolts beacuse of rust, drilling through tourqe converter bolts, rewiring harnesses, ect ect..] ) it should be a relatively easy process. All the bolts were broke loose less than 2 months ago, so I don't think it will be near the problem it was breaking 13 yr old rust.
I think one of the harder parts will be mounting the master cylinder. I'm not extremely familiar with manual transmissions, but I also wasn't with autos until I spontaniously decided I would do it myself (decided this right after seeing hte $450 quote from the mech shop.) I'd be scared to hell just to think what they'd charge me for fabrication of a mount alone. Glad I feel this competent! Least now its late spring, I won't be fighting off -10 degree weather in the garage!

Well, the master cylinder is EASY. There's just a little bracket covering the hole where it will mount, just unbolt it from the inside and it comes right out revealing the hole for it. The pedals are by far the hardest part, you have to remove the steering column entirely!

Oh, btw, don't be afraid to do it yourself, it's really not that difficult, a little time consuming and a little frustrating as things are hard to get to/hard to get out, but it's definatly do-able, even with 1 person. It was the first thing I did to my car when I got it, and hell, I didn't know ANYTHING about them!

I actually had the help of my buddy every night after work just by buying him dinner all the time. I thought it was a fair tradeoff I guess. I feel alot more competent to do more of it myself--where he is a car buff and I wasn't. Now at least I feel I can do more of it myself after having spent so much time under my car.

And to honest, the hardest part for the auto to auto swap, was jacking the car up when it had 2 flar tires! Car sits about .5 inches off the ground with two flats. Getting it off the ground took us almost 3 hours because the tires didn't hold air. We ended up buying a nice shop spec hydralc jack and 6 jackstands.

Hahaha, it's always something trivial that takes the most time. Anyway, good luck!

We also came up with a theory on which you mentioned that things are hard to get too. Japenese must have like tripple or quadrupple jointed arms to they can reach bolts in obscure locations. we found a really cool ratcheting wrench that had 2 joints in it. You really could get some torque with it when you used a 24" steel pipe on it! and PB blaster is awesome stuff.
