200k original motor

i scored an 88 rx7 for free- all i had to do was replace the radiator cap and passenger side wheel bearing. tranny grinds 3rd bad even after replacing with mobil1 synthetic 90w gear oil. It was sitting for at least two years though. anyway, my engnie sounds really good and runs very well also. but at startup i get a lot of smoke, only sometimes though.

Im loosing my liscence on monday for "street racing" my friend in his civic. we were doing 72mph side by side in a 35 zone. im gonna park the car in my garage for the winter so i can hopefully start making some progress. I go to a tech school for automotive technology and one of the seniors has an 88 turbo 2 he wants to get rid of. He was going to rebuild the motor but he has bigger plans with his festiva. I kind of want to tear his down and rebuild and port it, and i think ive heard of someone talking about using the NA rotors i the turbo 2 engine to increase compression.

As of right now i dont know what to do. i could do the complete turbo 2 swap (after a rebuild of course-drivetrain and all) throw a front mount in there and have a sweet sleeper, or i could save my money and put it toward building up the non turbo 13B thats in the car. Im sure hands down i need a rebuild on the 200K motor.

I would like a turbo but if i can pull some good numbers out of the NA motor ill be willing to stick with that.

any input is appreciated!!!!

Boooost. Well what are good numbers to you? Honostly you don't sound to experienced with the rotory. The n/a is limited to about 180 rwhp for the more unexperienced rotor heads. You have to really know what you're doing to pull any more than that out of it.

easy way, turbo

hard way, N/A

Cheap way... well, depends on your goal.... more than likely it will be cheaper for you to go turbo in the end....

Dont take my post the wrong way i am a die hard N/A fan, unwaivering. The fact is though, you can get more HP, easier, and normally cheaper from a TII...

im gonna hold my tongue and say it is all about the way you build it, i see more Turbo motors go to detonation and etc than N/A motors that go for any reason other than being old...

Your right, but I've seen plenty of low hp NA's and a few less, respectably powered TII's.

Everything depends on your goals. Did I hear something about a sleeper. Round here, sleeper = looking stock + mid 12's. Its not written in stone, but thats the general idea. 12's and NA could happen, but not for 99% of us. Looks like your looking at a complete TII drivetrain swap, and a rebuilt TII engine.

Have a sandwich and a Redbull, and start searching. ;-)

some of the most impressive kills on this board are form the 1st gen guys who do various turbo swaps. **** would be nasty... if you build a really powerful N/A it's going to cost more and you'll probably need an unstreetable porting setup etc--and this is coming from a guy who has a 172rwhp N/A.
