1991 Headlight Switch

I've just called my local Mazda dealer about a headlight switch for a '91 NA.

They told me that only a '91 switch will work in a '91.

Does anyone know if I can use any other years (86-90) for a headlight switch. Has anyone done this?

And before anyone gives me a hard time, I DID already perform several searched on the topic.

You can only use S5 headlight switches with S5's. I tried using a S4 headlight switch in my S5 and only the parking lights worked, no headlights IIRC.

Ummm, I usually can only find zenki switches to use in my '89. I just take the switch and the harness and switch the wires around on it to match up to the '89 main harness. It works.

Just take the two harnesses and put them side by side. You'll see what wires have to go where.

Like for LIke, go with an S5 switch. Try searching going through a junkyard to find a nicely working one

I don't remember seeing any clear distinction within both the s4 and s5 Headlight Switches when they were paired together. Whats the visible difference, If any?

Thanks for everyone's input. Would it be possible to take the switch into a specialist for a rebuild? S5's are kinda hard to come by here! I don't really feel like paying Mazda's ridiculously inflated prices to get a new one!!

Like for like only works in a perfect world. If you can't find a kouki switch, then that's that. That's the reason I make the zenki switches work on my '89 when I need to. Externally, there is no real difference. The wiring harnesses are what matter. It you rearrange the wires in the older wiring harness, you can make the older switch work perfectly with the newer car. It's worth the 10 minutes of work when you need to replace the switch after it melts down.
