1990 turboII, should i buy or not?

i found a 1990 turboII today that an old friend of mines brother had purchased from a police auction. He is willing to sell the car for $1000 because the car acts like it hits fuel cut at 4000-5000 rpm. Now, i don't think the engine is blown, but what would cause this? It pulls strong and then acts like there is nothing left to give untill you get below 4k. So i guess the question is, what could be causing this, and would it be worth the buy. I have own several 7's before, but this would be my first turbo rotary. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Btw, should you be able to hear the turbo spool, or is it kinda muffled?

Maybe the secondary injectors are not working?

Secondary injectors are supposed to cut on at 2700 rpm. You might hear some people jump and say 3800 rpm hesitation, but that's only on N/As. I would get a compression gauge and make sure that it (the motor) has good and even compression. If that's the case, i'd jump on it like a 15 cent supermodel hooker. Some things that could cause hesititation like that is probably fuel related. I'd look into the two filters in the fuel system, one being inline with the plumbing (normal fuel filter) and the intake pump filter. The turbo should really start to spool around 3k. You should definately hear it, if not, it could be anything from a bad turbo to popped off or messed with vacuum tubes.

Hope this helps, I just recently (2 months) went from a 83 GSL to my 91 TII, I love it. It's got some quirks that need dealing with (namely the bastard TPS, if anyone has a good on PM me) but there is no comparison to the speed of the 1st gens. I still love and have my 83, but it needs a motor (shot oil seals)...

Good luck. If the motor compression is ok, and the tranny and driveline are in good shape, buy it.

How many miles are on it?

I'd buy it. $1000 is the going price for a nice, not running Turbo II. If it runs or you can fix it then that's just a bonus.

Maybe clogged cats? Could be secondary injectors. Maybe something else... Either of the above are simple to fix, the injectors being slightly more involved.

Buy it already. I am sure can get someone on here to buy it from you for at least $1000 even if it doesn't run. And you can get it and do some basic maintence and the ATF trick and see what happens. Maybe the ECU is messed up, who knows.

When my cats were clogged (pre-gutting stage) my car would feel dead after 4500~5000 rpm. After gutting them it can finally breath enough to pull all the way to redline. With the clogged cats it felt like I was hitting an invisible wall trying accelerate on the highway. That car is worth so much more if that is all that is wrong with it.

Oh, this reminds me. Ever since I got the turbo upgrade I can hear the turbo spool up. It makes a decently high wistling sound. Is that normal?

Actually if the car is STOCK (with stock air box and ducting) you should have a HARD time hearing the turbo. Mazda actually did a nice job of quieting it down...

I always thought that the 5th and 6th port opened up at 3800 on the NA's. Since we don't have 5th and 6th ports...

On N/A's the 6 ports should open up around 3800... which is the same time that the system starts kicking in more fuel. The system on a TII is the same, it just doens't have the 6 port actuators. Also the TII of course has larger injectors, etc...

I've heard reports that people say that their A/F gauge goes lean when their car experiences the 3800 rpm "stumble"....
