what exactly are the benefits of turbocharging the N/a motor anyway? I have a N/A S5 motor in my S4 also and i was thinking or goin turbo also. im guessing the benefits would be more power output cause of the higher compression. this thread is definitely helping me. im thinking id rather drop 1500 on a J-Spec Efini 3 motor and save the headache.

Sometimes discouraging people and saving them from a hard lesson learned is doing them a favor. The people who take the time to research/look into what they're doing and do it right are typically the ones who don't run into problems. I think there was a lot in the first point that pointed out this was probably not the case.

In the end, people often fail to realize how easy it is to discourage someone when they are well respected members of the community. You can do whatever the hell you want if you educate yourself and show dedication and competence. Let the ignorant people blow their **** up and make examples.
I think that was our point most of the entire discussion so far. Given a fixed amount of money, it's often cheaper/easier to go with a j-spec turbo setup if you just have to get HP. Or you can put it into supporting mods, have a fairly decent N/A and learn a lot in the process and take a turbo N/A later. Or you can take that same amount, hack together a turbo setup on an engine that's probably getting tired already and end up with a bad result. It's all relative to how much money they've got and how much they know.

The benefit is having a higher effective CR. The lighter rotating assembly is also a minor benefit. It's a fine dance between balancing which has a better adiabatic efficiency, for the most part you'll be able to achieve more HP with a lower compression engine running higher boost because more often than not the turbo is more efficient (and has more control over heat rise) than the engine itself does. However when you can keep yourself away from that balance higher compression has it's obvious benefits.

Of course! I put about 1000KM on the car last week.

I have gambled with $1000 J-specs many times and always won. A reputable dealer goes a long, long way. I am sure there are many myths regarding J-specs but I have to believe that a quality deal with a good reputation has "pick of the litter" from the Japanese yards, or at least knows how to recognize junk before they buy it.

Research is the first step to asking an informed and intelligent question. When someone asks basic questions like this, it is a disservice to say "Go ahead!". They should instead be advised to take a more traditional and straightforward approach. In the end, the $1000 J-spec gamble would save them probably 3 times that cost in frustration, parts and an engine rebuild.

they seem to be doing okay
