Question 1989 GXL NA - Troubleshooting and Mods

I had a 2007 RX-8 GT, but it got mudered a while back, so now I just bought an S5 RX-7 1989 GXL NA 5SP that needs a little TLC. Any and all responses appreciated.

It has a mild streetport on a rebuilt motor that the owner told me was done about 6-7k miles ago and about 130k on the body. Car has a Mazdaspeed intake and everything else appears to be stock, minus cosmetics.

Here are some issues (yes, reading through the forum posts answered a lot of questions, but these I can't seem to pinpoint on searches):

***1. It idles at around 1300-1400, this sounds like a TPS adjustment, but when I start it when already warmed to operating temperature, it seems to idle at about 900, then creeps back up. Could this be the MAF?

***2. It seems to be misfiring since the idle has a slight little bounce and I can hear from the exhaust a consistent pop....popop.....pop... noise. Just before hitting mid range on temperature, it also seems to flash the CEL sporadically as I lightly drive it up to full running temp.
Hopefully replacing spark plugs and wires I bought from RB fix that. I will also try the propane test I saw posted here and see what happens. Maybe grounding?

3. I've searched a lot and couldn't find anything on if I should replace both fuel filters in the car. I plan to replace at least the second one.

4. Does O2 sensor actually have any effect on power of the car, as I plan to replace this anyway, was never replaced, but as an OBD1 car, I thought it didn't really do anything, though rx7.com claims it does.

Maintenance: I plan to replace plugs (stock), wires (RB Ultra), oil (RP 10w30), oil filter (Nippon), put SS oil lines from Corksport, fuel filter (OEM), coolant flush, and pre-mix Pettit Protek-R. Anything else?

Replace plugs with stock.

Dont need to get RB wires, stock is good enough

oil use something heavier, 10w40 or so

oil filter use OEM, same size as your old Rx-8

If your oil line is not leaking, leave it for now.

coolant flush with 50/50, Drain the engine block too.

Fuel Filter, all soft fuel lines, and maybe a new fuel pump.

Use Idemitsu Premix, Protek-R has residue.

If the CEL is coming on then you should check for codes.

nycgps: plugs I bought stock, RB wires I already bought, I just like the nice thick feeling of security, oil filter is technically stock, rx7.com says nippon IS the stock filter, hopefully they really are. oil lines again I just like security, this is my daily and I don't have tons of money if something ever fails. coolant, ok, drain coolant from block? ok. idemitsu I read on a read on a post from a high ranked member here that their oil contains a certain high level of substance that stays in suspension (molybdenum or another?) that is probably not good for non-race cars as it sits. if you could verify that, it'd be great. I used protek for months and month on my rx8, no issue, but if it's really that bad, I'll look into it. thanks

felix: thank you, didn't know that existed

Engine drain plug ---- All 12A/13B has it, Its just that for some reason Mazda did not document it on the 13B-MSP. Much easier to find it on older blocks. Its a Bright yellow plug thats around the spark plug area (mind you, the bright plug might be black by now cuz all the dirt build up over the years like mine, but its not hard to find it)

Open it, and coolant will squirt out, then just replace the washer with a new one (Mazda sells them, cheap), and put it back on with the plug (I bought a new plug for it)

Molybdenum is good for all kinds of engines, racing or not. Its just that its not that great for Cat converter.

I have an aftermarket cat which I dont give a **** about, if its dead in a few years, just bring it back for replacement (5 yr warranty lol).

if you have no cat then you have nothing to worry about.
