1989 GTU (But its automatic!!!!)

Hey all, I'm from Lincoln, Nebraska, and theres a guy here who has an 89 GTU for sale, black on black, rebuilt motor (with 70,000, car itself has 130,000), but its an automatic. Whats the word on automatic RX's? I know their dogs off the line, but they're still speedy. Any advice on what I should do? Perhaps like a new tranny, or should I just keep the auto since they're kinda rare?? Thanks, adios for now.

BTW, he wants $2500 obo for it.

Really, I'd keep looking. Automatic trannies typically fail around that point in time, and it's REALLY expensive to rebuild one, and most used auto trannies are bad as well.

IMHO, the automatic totally spoils the car. Keep that money in your pocket and keep looking.

Yeah, autos are kinda crappy, thats why I was thinking of swapping a manual tranny in???? Is that possible, (well, anythings possible) how much would it cost? Would that make it worth it or not? Just let me know. Adios.

Im not too sure but from what ive seen around the forum its easier to just start off with the 5 speed. Try contacting Node, im sure hes looked into it. When I had my 240 it was auto but after it went out I had it converted to stick. It was about $1k and took the shop about 1 week and included a 6 month warrenty. Overall I was very satasfied with the results.

just pull a 5speed tranny from a junk yard install it , beat on it till it goes out because most likely it will , then rebuild that one only if u like the car itself. if not go to other options

Yea....start out with a 5 speed. It'll save u the embarrassment and the headache that will come down the line. And it will be a lot faster than a AUTO. Trust me, i have a auto vert and it aint fun!

If your really care about performance don't get the car. There are plenty out there in that range. Just get a 5 speed.
