I am in the process of reinstalling my rebuilt rear calipers and am having an issue with the parking brake operation. When reinstalling the parking brake spindle shaft I noticed they seem to be side specific as evidenced by the L and R stamping in the end of the shafts. I matched L in the left caliper (also marked L) and R in the right caliper (also marked R).
After assembly I noticed the parking brake isnt functioning as it should. When the parking cable pulls the parking brake assembly on the caliper it actually disengages the parking brake. The parking brake assembly wants to rotate the opposite way to engage the parking brake from the way the cable is pulling when the hand brake is pulled up. Do I have the labeled spindle shafts mixed up?
When I did mine last summer, I did notice some shenanigans with the L/R designation. I disassembled each separately as to not mix up the ebrake parts. When reading up on the rear brakes, there is a section warning about this very thing.
When assembling the ebake spindles the indent goes towards the main spindle. The little tic tac looking thing goes in-between. I would try to swap the ebrake spindles and see what happens. Assuming the remaining parts are assembled correctly.
i haven't used my ebrakes since I rebuilt mine. Mine has the L ebrake bracket on the L calioer. The spindle does not have a mark that is readable.
@Jeff76 Thanks for the additional information! I actually swapped the emergency brake spindle shafts this morning between the two calipers and it is now functioning normally. Common sense told me "R" should go with "R" and "L" with "L" but that clearly isn't the case. My assumption is the markings on the spindle shafts notate the rotation direction of engagement rather than side of the car.
