1988 rx7 13b non turbo convertable ????????
does anyone here have one of these ? if so i would like to ask you some questions about some of the problems i am having with it. 1. is this car different than the non verts, other than the rear gear and the weight difference? 2. does it use a different ecu , mine has two boxes on the passenger side one silver with three plugs and one gold with one plug. it seems to have a mind of it's own some times it runs pretty good the not so good ,the 38k problem , runs rich real strong gas smell, and several other problems. if anyone can help please let me know. thanks ex,

I've got one. I believe the ECU is different from the 89+ models if that was your question, but I don't think its different from the coupes in that year. Somebody will pipe up if I have that wrong.
I don't have the 3800 problem but there are lots of fixes presented and available from what I recall.
I am not sure abou the running rich part, Ted K. answered a thread, if I understood it correctly, the clutch pedal can induce this if the small rubber stopper on the top disintigrates and allows the clutch interlock plunger to go through that stopperless hole. It can get that esoteric.
As for the gas smell, have you checked your infamous PD to determine if it leaks or not? If so, replace with an 89+ PD.

I've had an 88 vert for over 2 years now. The boxes on the passenger side are: 1) silver box with 3 plugs is you ECU, 2) the gold box with one plug is your Cruise Control Computer. As far the weird things your car does and the 3800 RPM hesitation. The first thing I would suggest is add some good ground wires from the Battery (-) to the engine and to the frame. I add New ground wires to mine and the it seemed to take care of a few problems. Bad ground connections are a cause for numerous problems with all RX7's.

Grounding battery
Last time i added an extra ground from the battery to the frame, it caused my interior and exterior lights to shut off and then back on after a period of time. That night i tried it, all my lights went off but the car still drove. I took the extra ground off and I never had that problem again. Did i do something wrong??
And if you ground it to the engine, where would be a good placE???

The PD can be intermitant. When it leaks, the engine often runs like **** (Due to reduced fuel pressure) and is accompanied by a strong fuel smell.
I found sometimes, in emergancies, if you smack the PD w/ somthing it'll work again for a while. But you really should NOT DRIVE THE CAR if that's the problem. When it leaks, fuel pools on top of the engine. When it runs down onto the top of the exhaust manifold, it napalms the entire engine/car.
PDs from 84-88 all seem to have this problem. Like droptop said, even if its not bad now, replace it w/ an 89 or newer unit. They don't seem to have this problem. Its good insurance.
