1987 Mazda Rx7 Turbo FIXER (Please Help)

I was just reading the local auto trader here, and I came upon a add, that literally blew my mind away... Here it is everyone...

Year: 1987
Make: MAZDA
Model: RX7
Model Detail: TURBO
Price: $1,000 Canadian Dollars
Mileage: 200 km
Date Posted: 10/25/01
Ad Type: Private
Comment: Fully loaded with all power options including sunroof and AC all operating. Turbo charger is operating as new. Car is black on red, sold in as is condition for fixer or excellent parts. 200 km. 200 km. First $1,000 drives it home or I will deliver.

I was thinking of purchasing this car, and making it my project car during the winter... First things first, im new to the world of rx7 turbo, so is this a Turbo II (anniversary) model? Tell me a little more about this car (when it came out of the factory)

I was thinking of doing something like this... Selling my current Non Turbo Mazda Rx7.... And starting off with a new Turbo II motor and transmission, from there I can work on my breaks purchasing a brake package with rotors, pads etc..... Have all the electrical / and what not checked out and fixed (he does say everything is operating) Get a new battery, and replace the stock exhaust system...... Interior refinishing will be done as I wanted to do with my non turbo, refinishing of all the surface areas, and leather upholstering.....

I’m just curious with what everyone else here thinks? Do you think it’s too much to handle? Or do you think it’s something I should go for? If I do the swap with a low kilometers engine jdm or from another source + tranny, wouldn’t the car pretty much run beautiful/new?? Let me know, im seriously considering getting this car..... I can also add some new rims....

Its either getting the Turbo II model and refixing, or moving towards a whole new car the Turbo DSM cars (eclipse/talon 1st gen)

Ps.... My Non Turbo is great but I need a little more.. ummf

Take care

As for the model, it would be a Turbo II, and not the anniversary edition. In the US, all turbo RX-7s from '86-'91 were designated Turbo II. In 1988 the 10th anniversary edition was produced and was only available as a Turbo II (it sported white paint with body color moldings, wheels, and taillights. It also had black leather interior)

As for your planned project, thats a big one. If you are going to buy an RX-7 to build up, then make sure and start with one that is in perfect or near perfect body condition. Nothing worse than dealing with a previously wrecked car and trying to get it back to original condition. Otherwise, good luck and have fun!

all I can say is that I don't like working on cars when it's really really cold. So I would wait till spring!

Thanks for the info, good to know stuff

Changed my mind, gave him a call, and the car has way to many problems for my liking , personally I think its more of a part's car then anything.

Can you guys help me out here, I have a 1991 Mazda Rx7 GXL, fully loaded, body is in great condition as is the interrior, its a great car, fun and what not, but it doesnt have a lot of kick to it........ Incredible handling (I just picked it up a few days ago and had it insured).... What can I do to add a good amount of power too it???? Should I go for intake/exhaust (cut my cats) let me know here....... Also is there anyway of me turning my car into a turbo ??? Without adding lots and lots of cash??

PS........... Do you think a wet nos shot is the way to go

220HP rear wheel is about max you can make with an NA. Exhaust, intake, cold air box, perf. catalytic converter, fresh air headlight scoop, ignition system (stronger spark), 60K service, porting the engine, etc.. will help allot

Make that 87-91. No '86 turbo models in the US.

Wow 220 is not bad , not bad at all...

I did a run with a friend in his Talon, and I got pretty badly beat by him (He was the TSi Model) not all wheel drive, from the start to about 40 kmph I was with him..... after about 60 kmph I was pretty much "damn" smoked.... And I think the Turbo really spools up at around 80+kmph on it, cause I could no longer see him

Oh well, I cant complain, I got myself a great little sports car, I guess I just need to figure out what I want to do with it
