Idle Adjustment Tutorials...know of any???

So now that i put in the new TPS, when driving the car seems fine again...all the power is back...maybe the TPS needs more adjusting, but when driving all the response is there and no hesitation.

but the car idles high at 1000. and fluctuates between 1000-1200 every 3 seconds or so. and if i push the gas ever so slightly and leave my foot there to get it up to 1300...then it'll fluctuate between 1300-1500. but once its in gear and moving its fine.

so what idle screw should i go after first??? i know there's one behind the intercooler, but that would seem hard to get to unless the IC is removed. and i guess there is the one on the BAC. should the car be running? or should i just warm it up, take off the IC, and back on the screw a little...then put back on the IC and see what happens?

thanks for any input

Man, mine idles at like 1500 & sometimes it will idle at 2000. I don't know whats wrong with mine but I have an N/A. Car runs great other than that. No problems while moving. Thing I don't like is it seems to waste alot of gas.

Just excercising my fingers. If you had a 86=88 I'd suggest http://www.iluvmyrx7.com and suggest going to section 4a that has a section that tells you how to set your idle. But, alas, you have a 91 so that won't work. I'd suggest a factory manual or a Haynes. There is a process that involve jumpering a plug called a initial set jumper plug, on the 87. I'd wager the 91 is the same. Maybe this will bump your post up again. Have fun.

thanks man...yeah i jumped the intial set connector, and then turned the screw on the BAC valve. when i loosened the screw the idle seemed to smooth out but go up. so i tightened the screw to the point where it was snug, and it dropped a few rpm's and smoothed out totally...but its still kinda high at 1300. but at least its smooth now.

i'm wondering if its the TPS that needs further adjustment to fix the idle...or maybe the hard idle screw behind the intercooler. guess i'll have to check those out.

OK, here are a few thoughts on this. That idle screw behind the intercooler should not have changed adjustment unless someone fiddled with it, since it has a locknut to hold it on. You can mess with it if you want, but I would suggest the following be done first. Make sure that there isn't a cable holding the throttle plate from completely seating. This happened on my car, on the warm start assist gismo, I think. Could also be cruise control or throttle pedal cable. If these all are ok, make sure that the fast idle cam is not holding the throttle plate open. If this is ok, then check for any intake vacuum leaks. This is very important, before you mess with that screw there MUST BE NO VACUUM LEAKS! If everything checks out, on a fully warmed up engine, pull the BAC electrical connector off and adjust the idle for 700 rpm, with the BAC idle adjust screw set for lowest possible idle. Then reconnect the BAC to the ECU, jumper the initial set connector to ground, and adjust for 750 rpm idle with the BAC adjust screw, with no accesories on (and no radiator electric fan running, if you have one). This procedure is not written anywhere, but I believe it should work fine. Good luck!
