14" monitor in glove compartment

I decided to put a computer on board instead of lugging the laptop in and out. Then It occured to me that it might be a little difficult to program the E8 on a 7" visor monitor so I devised a plan to put a 14" in the GC. Started with a new Hyvision 14" monitor from tiger direct and trimmed the inner box to fit the monitor. I built a mounting frame to bolt to the monitor and bought a drawer slider set from home depot. I had to trim that down because it was too long which included making new stops and I used a punch to make a dimple to prevent the slider from just falling back down ( when you pull it out far enough the ball bearings go past the dimple and it "locks" into place) check out the pics below hope they go in right

Dude, thats fucken sick. Thats what Ive planned to do ever since i got my rx7.

What i plan on doing with mine though, touch screen, im going to custom fit it into the center console, replacing stereo, and the ac/heater controls.

I plan to wire in the heater conrols to be on-screen. As well as run all of my music needs through the computer.

Im glad you did that. Ive been waiting for somebody to do this.

The hard part of your project is getting the hardware to work with the software. Let me know if you overcome that problem.

I also intend to use the computer like an Ipod. I have a Tuner /navigation system that accepts inputs for more crap than I can fit in the car.

I looked for a long time to find a monitor with such a small frame. That makes it possible to put in 14" and helps it look bigger too.

One of the goals of this build was to appear entirely stock (accept RHD and shaved doors) Inside I will be keeping the storage bins even with the 2 JL audio 12w7 speakers powered by some old school Phoenix gold amps should put out 1600 watts at 1.5 ohms for the subs and 400 watts for the seperates up front (undecided on brand) leaning towards MB quart.

For any one who hasnt seen the whole project yet here is a link.

In canada, we can import any car reguardless of restrictions if it more then 15 years old...

in US, they have veryious requirements to be met to register the vehicle

Yes Superrotorman you can import and drive JDM cars with ease. We can choose to see a different doctor if we dont like what the first one says. Ill put in the hours on the car and keep the good medical care.

I am just not going to be the one to do it lol.

If you think about it, the most confusing part will be getting all the software to work with the computer, just like tinvestor said.

IE: Basically a blower motor control is a variable resistor... I'm sure you could use a computer to control the varying voltage signal going to the motor, it's all a matter of programming it. All you really need is a wiring schematic, and real good computer skills, time and patience to get it done.

The ducting is probably the same way, run off a motor or something to control which ducts open when a specific button is pressed. Get the power and grounds for each of em, wire em into a computer somehow, program it, and voila. Computer controlled A/C and heater controls.

I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but that seems to be the gist of it...

Just my .02.

James

PS: tinvestor, nice work on that screen in the glove compartment! Looks clean, man!!

Wow thanks for that. This has opened up a new option for a location of a switch panel in one of the most convenient spots in the car.

and thank you 88RX7TII that is one of the most usefull links attached to one of my threads.

Drive an 01 Prius - the touch screen monitor displays the car's charging capacity, which is driving the car ( engine or electric motor) as well as avergage fuel consumption.......turning on the heater fan would just be another add on - they're only a step away on the OE level

Umm the 1983 Buick Riviera concept car did this, its old technology just not implemented much.

My dad prototyped the car for 6 months.

Has no one really known this? Many Mercedes BMW’s and Lincolns have also done this over the years.

Cosmo_TT - If you got the cash I will do it for you.

Im going to do it.

Its called custom made touch screen LCD. I do computer programing, engineering, repair and consulting as my buisness. I can make it, just with LOTS of time.

If i recall mazda made a digital control for the AC and heater. nothen special.

I just think it would be cool and defanitly unique. Lots of cars have digital displays. look at the prius. lots of older luxury cars have it. Even way back into the 80's cars had it. But, it wasnt done very well.

I want to be able to run a full standalone via a touch screen lcd. run my stereo off the LCD. bascily anything you can think of.
