If i recall mazda made a digital control for the AC and heater. nothen special.
Yep. That was the Japan only "climate control" logicon. For a while I was going to put one in my car but the I realised that since I don't have A/C it would be rather pointless...Our logicon is basically easy to hack anyway. The only variable controls are just linear pots connected as a voltage divider. Easy to hack with several "volume control" ICs on the market. I even have a schematic on my website that would probably do it...

I just think it would be cool and defanitly unique. Lots of cars have digital displays. look at the prius. lots of older luxury cars have it. Even way back into the 80's cars had it. But, it wasnt done very well.
I want to be able to run a full standalone via a touch screen lcd. run my stereo off the LCD. bascily anything you can think of.
I hate the Prius display. Of course I'm not big on the whole Prius anway. Ugly, slow and crappy mileage...

Running the car off a computer is great until it crashes. Then you have to fiddle with rebooting the thing while driving down the freeway with the heater stuck on full blast in July as the strereo gradually gets louder and louder being tuned to the most horrid boy-band channel available...

If you really want to do this, check out http://www.mp3car.com . It's all been done a million times.

It's not so much a Windows problem. Any general purpose PC is far more crashy in the automotive environment...If there's anything I've learned from all the years I did the MP3Car thing, that's the most important. Also don't shock mount your computer since that's worse then just hard mounting it (took me 3 hard drives to learn that).

Emissions in america is one of the hurdles

Bureacracy(sp?) is another hurdler = lots of waiting time

Approval of the state and government

Probably a driving test of some sort

Special license or some bullshit

ETC ETC ETC

America wants americans to buy AMERICAN CARS or atleast cars that are profitable to AMERICA (i.e cars that are USDM), so in a nutshell it is america's greed that keeps us from doing what we want sometimes

if it was a ford or a chevy, no cop would bat an eye. It's an import, the government hates imports. You put a cone filter intake and a rice can on the back and you'll get a ticket. Atleast... out here in cali you will. RHD can be legal, but you've got to pay pay pay, and it better be stock or they'll bend you over and ram it up even further for the money money money

In Illinois cops are not trained to harass J-spec motorists the "culture" is smaller out here and less connected to crime than in California. In Chicago area it is spinners and SUV's that get harassed becuse they are the ones connected to criminals.

Well, yeah, they harass those too, believe me. it just all depends on what part of town you're in.
