13b-re swap questions

my engine started running like crap, compression tested it, and it wasn't good. I was planning on doing a 13b-re swap sometime in the near future, but because of the sudden downfall in the health of my 13bt, i'm pressured to do the swap a couple months early, with a bit less cash than i was planning to do it with.

My main question is whether or not the 13b-re can be run with the stock sequential turbo's in my s4 tii. I've been to the fc3s pro site, and I know it says its near impossible to retain the operation of the twin turbos without the stock cosmo ECU. The thing is, the engine importer i'm working with is able to supply the stock cosmo ecu with the engine.

So will I be able to swap the 13b-re into my s4 tii using the stock cosmo ecu and what will be required as far as wiring?

Thanks,
-Jon

no, unless you feel like dropping in the automatic transmission. they only came in auto's, you'll need to trick it into thinking its a manual. You can't use the twins, but you can reuse the stock s4 turbo you have.

Basically you'll have to get a stand alone system in order to operate with the engine.
You have better luck buying a s4 block for few hundred bucks and drop it in.

I have decent budget, i wouldn't call it low.
I understand my tii doesnt have twin turbos, but the 13b-re does.
And I'm not asking whether or not the s4 harness works with the re.
The engine will come with the re engine harness and the cosmo ecu.

Simply put - can i do the swap using the cosmo ecu?

ok - thanks ryu

so just for clarification - the cosmo ecu will not work properly without an automatic transmission, correct?

IMO, thats sorta strange, i've helped many of my other friends do swaps on cars ranging from toyota's to bmw's - the auto ecu worked with a manual transmission - it just set faults for it.

you can use the s4 harness and ecu for the 13bre , i did . use the single turbo and manfifold from your s4 13bt as well as the crank angle sensor (different plug) you also have to wire the 13bre tps so that your s4 ecu can get a useable signal (very simple actually) . You can use your flywheel clutch and transmission . just "search " and you'll find a lot of answers .

i also soldered in the 13bre fuel injector clips for the primaries on the s4 harness . i should also mention that i am not running any emissions equipment .

Its a pretty hack setup but it seems to work with my rtek 1.7 ecu . I just got the car running a few days ago for a few minutes and then shut it down due to a coolant and fuel leak due to a rusted out hard line . If you have the money i'd go megasquirt or microtech . I may go to stand alone if im not happy with my current setup .. time will tell . if you have any specific questions about something pm me . but i got a lot of my information from searching and common sense .

Just a thought::::::::::::::::: I don't see how the COSMO harness is going to interface with the FRONT harness in your car, unless quite a bit of rewiring is done to the plugs. I'm not talking about the Cosmo fitting the Cosmo ECU, but the mating of the Cosmo with the FRONT harness plugs. Sometimes refered to as FEM-01 and FEM-02.

Outside of that, I don't know a RE from a REW.

What about the oil pump? Does the s4 require that to be connected in order for the pump and ecu to run properly?

Just remember you need motor mounts and oil lines made to fit them. Several little things that are different about it. safc + stock ecu will work as well.

if you mean the oil injection setup , no . i eliminated it (premixing now). used a block off plate on the 13bre front cover and plugs where the squirters were . remember on the s4 it is mechanical . if you have an s5 i believe you will have a problem .

if i could go back i would have just gotten a 13bt and not done the swap . when i was looking for a 13bt the market was dry but i found a smokin deal on a 13bre so i got it . honestly this swap is not for everyone and there are gonna be a lot of hidden expenses .

thanks for all the help and advice - it is very much appreciated.

but honestly, I guess I'm stubborn, thick headed, and overall stupid. But I can't resist the idea of a 13b-re... maybe its the novelty, but for whatever reason, i'm still interested.

I'm gonna continue with my research and see how things go. Note how i say research -> please don't flame me for trying to jump into things i don't know about. I'm trying to learn on something where information isn't quite as readily available before i do anything else.

Think of it as... researching on what kind of gun and bullet I want to use to shoot myself in the foot with =P

I guess its time for bed- i'm rambling on and on senselessly - lol
