10k! What now?

Well, i was in an accident, a few months back, my car ran, but i had a small neck injury, and they declared it a total loss. I wasn't faulty, and the lawyers said atleast 10k would come out of this case, plus money for not being able to use my car. (which won't start because i was messin with it)

My car is an 86 gxl, i was wondering what do you think i should do, Im not gonna get out of the rotary world, because its my life now, but with 10k i could maybe pull out an fd from someone, maybe off a dealer and just pay off the rest later. Or just dunk it all into my fc or another fc, maybe a tII, what would be the best way to go? As far as performance wise, looks are not that important to me, and i already like the stock look of fc's, so I would like to make my car the fastest possible with 10k, N20, bigger turbo, ports, tell me............prices, advice, jspec on my current fc,+ mods, new fc mods, fd? what mods? Thanks guys

I say sell or part out your currect FC depending on condition and get yourself a TII with a great interior/exterior and a blown engine. Then have the engine rebuilt to your specs and go single turbo/haltech e11/fmic(assuming you know all other mods to do). Then do whatever you would like to change the appearance of the car. Thats my opinion.

fix and engine swap eh? but i don't wann mess with it myself, like the engine swap is a pain in the *** to do on my own, and everyone down here is rotor-stupid, they all don't understand the rotaries, but since im kinda new, i'd probably end up spending more than i should pay for an engine swap and installation.

Options listed from worst to best:

A) Dump $10K into your car to make it into really nice $5K car.
B) Buy someone else's $20K money pit for $10K.
C) Sell your car for parts, buy a nice TII for $5K, and save the rest of the money for future repairs.
D) After the case is settled for 10K, and the lawyer takes his $9,500 cut, use the remaining $500 to buy a new 10-speed bike for college.

Option B Examples:

A bit out of your price range, but it's still the same general idea:

$10K is definately not enough to get a decent FD and keep it in top shape.. go for a TII in excellent shape for around $6k and save the rest for mods/repairs

i would do as Ryde _Or_Die said, find a nice TII with a blown motor and sink the money into that.

P.S. if your lawyer said that the case would settle for $10,000 then your only gonne get $6,666 after he takes his 33%, IF he only takes 33% some take 40%

save it and invest it into a business, then buy a 3-rotor FD in 5 years, and a Ferrari 360 in 7 years.

Geez, $10k? Check out eBay Motors, you just opened the door to 3rd gen if you like. Personally, if you are dedicated to the 2nd gen I would buy an 88gtu and add a supercharger.

i agree with the moderator.
spend 8 thousand or so on a real nice turboII that already has mods done to it. my car already had an FCD, HKS intake and exhaust when i bought it so i havent needed to do much.
dont go too hardcore though, i wouldnt get one with a full T04 and haltech just so you can keep things simple and streetable. a stock turbo and ecu (with all the other mods) can still get you into 13's which is fast enough for me.
maybe spend some of the extra money on some nice wheels and tires (I HATE the stock wheels) and keep the rest to fix it when something breaks

buy a tII, if you don't want to do the engine swap that might be your best bet(or a fd), fix it up, personally i would put as much as i could into a 3 rotor swap or you would have more then enough to do a RE or a REW swap.... RE mmmmmmmm *gets warm fuzzy fealing*

but if your going to do a re or rew swap then it would be smart to get a TII so you won't have to upgrade the DT

Well is your 86 still driveable/easily fixable? If so I think that I would fix it up with as little money as possable then get a TII and keep the 86 as your daily driver and use the rest of the money left over from buying the TII to mod it and... repair it in the future.

For the people that said you can get a 3rd gen for 10,000. That thing would be such a **** pile. Wait for the rx8 to start selling and for the aftermarket to support it. Then you MIGHT see 3rd gen prices come down. Seriously though...every 3rd gen I've seen for 10k have some serious issues or a ton of miles.
