*Sigh* Belts

Well, I've come to the conclusion that belts are freaking gay...

I'm on the way home tonight, decide to get on the gas and it squeals at 5k rpm...no big deal...OR IS IT?

I get home, decide to LEAN on the crow bar to tighten the belt up thinking that it would possibly make it stop...nerp just bumped it up, it only does it past 7k rpm now...

Then the alt bolt that holds the alt up snapped in half...another POS moment for my car, first the exhaust, then the door handle, now this?! Managed to yank another one from the engine bay off the PS pump hose holder...

So I swap belts for the higher end Dayco belt, it's not the same size as the old one has apparently STRETCHED and wasnt made to fit the S5, only the S4 when Camden put out the kit...so guys S4 and S5 pulley config and belt #s must be different...oh well

So back to the story, I tear my car apart at 11 PM, and swap the belts and think wow, it's way too short and have to kind of rig it on there, but the pulleys line up and it looks decent so I start her up, take it to 5k no problem, up it to 8k and there she is again...SQUEEEEEAL

I HATE BELTS...

Is there something I'm doing wrong? I untensioned it a bit thinking maybe it was over tightened but apparently thats not it...

I'm guessing you removed your airpump and are running without that belt? I've done the same and get a small squeal when the engine is cold and hit the gas. My suggestion is just dont drive around at 8 grand

no i have a supercharger...

You know what I just thought about, a few things.

1) When it squeals, I don't loose boost...like it should.
2) When it squeals, the GF says its the alt. which I assumed was just because the belt was hoping.
3) Maybe it just made the pulley tighten down when I tensioned the belt up that much?

My belt squeal went away after I swapped belts to the shortest one I gave you, but maybe there is some difference between the pulley systems. When i called Camden about the problem, their solution was spend $400 on a 10-rib setup or $1200 on a cog drive setup. I ponied up the money for the 10-rib kit, but guess what, the supercharger pulley they sent me was COMPLETELY the wrong size, and my car boosted to 22psi, damn near popped my engine, and destroyed the supercharger.

So I call Atkins again, and all of a sudden, something's wrong with my engine. I must have an extremely restrictive exhaust with blocked cats, and my engine may be in bad shape. Hmm, the funny thing was that I had catless TRUE DUAL EXHAUST and a 20K MILE REMAN MOTOR. Compression test results were ~110, all three faces, both rotors, even after the supercharger to a dump and spit some aluminum through my engine.

Seriously, I sold that kit to you under the impression that Atkins had made good on their promise to fix whatever was wrong with the supercharger, but it doesn't seem like they held their promise. I wish I could tell you something to comfort you, but to be honest, Atkins will probably start telling you YOUR car has some problems at this point. Are you at least seeing correct boost levels? When I had my boost gauge installed, I was seeing ~12psi when the belt wasn't slipping badly.

I seriously feel you on the door handle part. Hell, I went to move my window down and something just broke. My door handle and lock(outside) are just dead. As far as belts go, I ended up replacing the old solid belts with the belts that have ridges in them.

There's nothing wrong with the supercharger AFAIK, I've got the -5 Pulley on there as of right now and it boosts at 5 PSI at 1k rpm and holds a steady 8 PSI throughout the rest of the RPM range after about 2-3k rpm...

I don't think this time around has anything to do with the actual supercharger but something else that's going on.

Did you maybe get some grease/oil/etc. in one of your pullies? I'd try thouroughly cleaning the pullies off, then spray some belt dressing on the belts.

I'd also get a flat piece of metal or wood that will span the alternator and water pump pulley and messure the deflection (should be ~1/2") to make sure you don't tighten it too much.

If your alternator belt is slipping it could also mean your water bump is slipping too, which can't be good for the system.

There isn't a difference in the pulley setup between a S4/S5. Part of the problem is it's a 6rib on a positive displacement blower that's design produces a lot of drag, short of replacing the belt often or getting lucky and finding a really good belt, chances are it's going to squeel. They should've used at least an 8 to start. And putting that much tension on the belt isn't going to help things any, it's going to cause premature failure of various bearings, as well as cause the belt to stretch/break and be even worse.

Seems to be a pretty common occurance lately...
