*pop* at WOT when cruising.. help?

Hey guys, I've had this little problem since I've had the car. When I am cruising about 75-80 on the freeway in 5th, and I nail the throttle to pass someone, I get a loud pop right before the turbo starts spooling. Is this normal? Or messed up? Or what?

Also, my acceleration is kind of bumpy. I get a little shaking, almost like small hesitations, as I acclerate through any gear, but its very noticeable in 2nd.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

My guess is that you're either running WAY rich, and the pop is afterburn, or you're running WAY lean, and it's detonating.

Anyone else have a guess?

popping at higher rpm's is natural for a rex with open exhaust...although it should rather happen when you shift or are letting off the gas. my 91 n/a pops ANYTIME i shift above 6K thanks to the N1 catback. buuuuut, it never pops while its beginning to accelerate...

when i got my T2 i also had occasional pops like you and rough acceleration on the highway...turned out to be the TPS...do you get any check engine lights? ever?...

No, I never get check engine lights. Yeah, I do get the backfiring when I shift high, but I usually expect it. The pop happens when I'm at around 2500-3500 RPMs, and I just floor it. Kapow!

Is the popping sound acually from the exhaust? or could it be a tranny mount? I know my car vibrates right now bigtime cuz my tranny mount is bad and one of the rubber bushings on the bottom is gone now.. So when I accelerate it vibrates bigtime.. Before it was broken, however, It vibrated a lot when trying to floor it in 5th,... 5th is an over-drive and your not going to get much response from it (at least in N/A I don't) use 4th but yea, check your rubber bushings on your tranny mounts..

I am quite sure it is from the exhaust because its sounds like a backfire (and probably is). it does it in other gears too, so I don't think that is it, but thanks

Mine used to do that before I replaced the TPS.

You can check the voltage (do a search for it...I'm not sure which wire is which) but mine read fine right before it died completely. Does the car hesitate at high rpm's at all? If not, the TPS might just be adjusted wrong, which you can fix yourself with some hand tools.

EDIT: can't search...I'm sure someone here knows a site with the info...I have one bookmarked at home, but that doesn't help me now.

Actually, I checked it with the method from K2RD and it came out fine. Unless I was reading something wrong? I adjusted it a little bit too.
