*newbie* help please
Hello everyone, I recently purchased a 1987 rx7 for 400 dollars. The body is in pretty good condition, a few scratches and one dent on the rear driver side. I cleaned the interior but it is missing the center stereo console and a few trim pieces., and it doesnt run right now. I have a few problems that I wanted to ask you guys about. I got the car started but it was only for about 3 seconds, I found out the gas tank has about a quarter size hole in it and i cant hear the fuel pump turn on when i turn the key, it also has a prob. with the clutch pedal. when you push it down half way, it slams to the floor and sticks. The car has been sitting since 1999 and im surprised that it even started at all.... does anybody know how to fix the clutch prob and where i can get a new gas tank and tell me how to fix the fuel pump prob???
well junk yard for the gas tank oem is way to much if you get it anywhere else. as for the clutch prob it has ALOT of air in it and needs all new fluide so i would drain all of it and use new brake fluide also if it only runs for a sec or to take out the spark plugs and check the compression the easy way is have some one crank it and u can feel the puff with your hand 3-5in way
The fuel pump does not turn on until the afm moves. With the ignition on, have an assistant push the flapper door on the afm (requires removing the air filter) while you listen for the fuel pump to turn on in the back of the car.
thanks everybody, Im new to the rotary thing (ex honda junkie lol) I just wanted to do somthing diff, and when I saw a pic of the second gen I fell in love plus it fell into my price range. I want to get this thing running. It really was a good deal for 400 dollars. Ill keep ypu guys updated
I actually have the whole air filter assembly off right now all the ay up to the start of the intake manifold.... should I put it back on up to the flapper door part and try it???? plus is there a fuse anywhere for the fuel pump I should check????

ok ok your prob gonna laugh at me.... where the hell are the spark plugs located on the rotary motor???? I have had NO experience whatsoever with this motor so.....
You can run the car with no filter but if you have the afm disconnected the car either start initially and then stall or not start altogether. Be sure there are no leaks between the AFM and the throttle body.
I reconnected all the hoses up to the flapper door and opened it and tryed to start it but nothing.... there is a hole on the bottom of the hose that I think is suppose to be there, but i dont know
newbie... needs help
I actually posted a thread about a week ago about my fuel pump and now I cannot 'find it so im going to continue it on this one... I have an 87 rx7. my problem is this: I bought a rx7 a few months ago and i am now just starting to fix it up and ran into my first prob. wwhen I turn on my car I cannot hear the fuel pump turning on. I asked a fe people and did what they told me and nothing worked... i even "bridged" the yellow hook up by the passenger side strut tower with a piece of wire..... does anybody know how i can find out if my fuel pump needs to be replaced??? also im missing a piece of pipe that is right above the intake maifold... one side stops at the end of the intake twards the drivers side and the other one continues somewhere down the passenger side, does anybody know what ths is or if I need this part???

Another hint to save trouble, try to come up with a better Title for your threads, no likes the Help! threads, why not something like "Can't hear Fuel Pump on '87 NA" or "How to diagnose Fuel pump failure"? Ya know, something that reflects the nature of the thread.
Anyways, I will post a reply in the old thread so we can keep it all together okay? Lets leave this thread to die as a lesson well learned.

If you bridged the yellow check connector and turned the key to on and didn't hear anything, i would check the pump out further. You can undo the metal a screws and actually look and see if the pump is squirting fuel, are the plugs wet?
Or your power supply to the pump?
