Exclamation $95 for brake pads?? MAZDA guy sux!

Went to Mazda today. The guy had no idea what he was talking abaout. I told him i had a 90 RX-7. He says, "Mazda or Ford?" WTF!? So after he looks in both a book and computer. Asks if i have a vert. I say no, Naturally aspirated coupe. He says "all i see is F&R pads, nothing aspirated!" Dumass. So eventually he asks if i have adjusting suspension. I said yeah. He said there $95 for a front set! I asked if those were 4-piston, he says "I think they use a rotary engine.." MY GOD! what a moron! So i said i would come back later...and left.

Later i went to Checker Auto and ordered some (4 days) for about $27. They are RAYBESTOS brand. Does that sound right? 95 to 27 is a BIG difference...

Thanx

There is a big difference in quality too. I wouldn't use those except in a daily commuter car that never sees "spirited" driving conditions.

Axxis Metal Masters are good (for being inexepensive) street pads. I paid about $40 front (on sale) and $60 rear I think.

Hehehe... that 4-piston comment is classic! :p

Unfortunately, that's pretty much the usual thing nowadays. For example, the guy at the speed shop said he didn't have any AN hose fittings for my Mazda, but he had them for a Ford. (Um, AN is universal Beavis). Anyway, that's why I now have Ford AN fittings on my Mazda - it's easier just to go along with them rather than wasting an hour explaining it to them. Let's see, there's also the guy who tried to sell me chrome valve covers, the guy who tried to sell me platinum spark plugs, the guy who couldn't understand the concept that ANY series of battery will fit in my RACE car which is NOT listed in his computer, there's my friend's RX-7 that was diagnosed with bad piston rings by TWO so-called mechanics, etc. etc. etc.

Geez, you could get race pads for $97/set. I tried some el-cheapo pads on my RX-7 once, and they worked just fine for putting around town. Be sure to get your rotors turned.

Daily commuter, Raybestos is ok. But, give me Bendix every time. And, if you do it right, you'll never have to pay for pads again.

Generally speaking, between $30-35 bucks is what I'd expect for Bendix, so $27 for the Raybestos sounds about right.

I bought front pads from the local Mazda Dealer for $45.00. This was for an '87 TII with 4 piston calipers. I'd check with a different dealer (Maybe Brown???) or Mazdatrix....that price sounds way high to me.

I think the OEM pads also include the shim and clip kit, still expensive at $97. My local dealer has a special for front brake job including parts and labor for $99.

I would return Raybesto. It's crap as far as I am concerned. I've used those on my Buick which yielded only 20k mi of wearing at one time. Other time, it yielded only 35k mi. I just think it's easier if you put on some quality stuff that lasts but is easy on the rotor so you don't end up doing more work for saving a few bucks.

Bendix is a step up. I would buy Hawk HPS or Axxis Metal Metrix. These are around 45 a set.

Hey all you Bendix lovers out there - I have had both Raybestos and Bendix on the same car and you are absolutely right - Bendix brakes will outlast the Raybestos brakes by at least 10K miles. Unfortunately, I have another priority when it comes to brakes -
STOPPING THE CAR!
After putting on the Bendix brakes, 2 things were immediately apparent - it took SIGNIFICANTLY more pedal pressure to come to a normal stop, and if you needed to really apply the brakes, nothing much seemed to happen until you were really pushing on them, and then they would suddenly grab real hard. My wife flatly refused to drive the car anymore (it was her car!), and I put up with these "wonderful" long lasting brakes for almost 50K miles!
When it came time to replace the brakes again, I threw away the "lifetime warranty" and spent money again on brakes - this time the "bad" Raybestos brakes. Low and behold, the car stopped normally again! Now, every 35K, I replace the Bendix pads, and sometimes I even drive my wife's car.
I put Raybestos top-of-the-line ceramic pads in my Maxima. The old pads (I don't know what brand they were) would fade to the point of being almost non-existent after 1 panic stop from 80+ mph. The new raybestos pads - 3 panic stops from 80+ mph, and no noticeable fade. Oh yeah, they are as easy to drive as OEM pads.
Know what? You can have your Bendix pads, I'll stick with my Raybestos pads, thank you!

Unlike dealers like Saab, Mazda dont have national pricing. Which means different dealers have different prices. I can pick up a set of new front pads for 60 at local Mazda in CT, 30 something at Mazda Comp, 100 in some Joe Schmoe Mazda in New Hampshire. Anyway, if you want to stop squeeking, get Mazda, other wise, go with Albany, gurantee you get pissed off enought hat you will junk the pads in 2 days when it start squeeking

Yo DRE,

Just log into Tire Rack (www.tirerack.com). You can pick up a front set (or rear) of Hawk for $40 + shipping. Or, you can get a more sportier +set for $11 more. The prices are a lot cheaper than any other that I have seen. Can't beat that.

Hmmmm... first stop or all stops? My Metal Masters seem to stop better after 1-2 stops (warming up??)

Brad,

These pads are based on ceramics - they stop exactly the same, hot or cold.

Done Raybestos, Done Bendix. My experience is the opposite which is why every car I own (5) run Bendix.

Don't know why the bad experience. Perhaps when you bled the brakes when you replaced the Bendix you cleared some air in the line you didn't realize was there.

hahaha, that is a classic. I'll never pay $95 for front pads, I bought some bendix in my local parts store for ~$25. I think the calipers are rotary
