Whos done an interior swap?

Okay, so I may be buying this one rx7 and I took sweet and all but the interior is horrid!! I hate that red interior nonsense, just repulsive. Those who've done a swap, how hard was it ? and how long did it take? I know the dash is a pain in the @ss and all that. But what about carpets and stuff, note that I've never done anything like this before

I've done a FULL interior swap. Took me about 4-5 hours to pull the old, and about 5-6 to put in the new. YMMV.

The second gen isn't all that bad to pull (try a third gen if you want to see some flimsy ****) but like most modern interiors, it's held together with a combination of snaps and screws.
The trick is knowing when you need to pull harder or if there's still a fastener hidden somewhere.

It's also likely you'll discover broken mounts/tabs as the plastic has gotten brittle and people have abused them.
It's possible that some of your interior is sitting in place because it doesn't yet know it can go anywhere else. This will change once you pull everything apart and then try to reinstall.

As for the carpet...
You can get a good idea of it's condition by pulling a seat and removing the sill plate.
The carpet can then be peeled up and you can see what's going on beneath it.
Better to know ahead of time if you're going to clean what you have or just replace it.

It'll be a treasure hunt...in a twenty year old car there's no telling what you might find.

I have two full black s5 interiors pulled out ready to sell. They weren't that hard to get out. The dash is sort of a pain in the *** the first time but after that it isn't so bad.

^+1. I dedicated an entire weekend to my interior swap. It was my first time + factor in the learning curve.

interior work can be a pita with an older car like ours, plastics break very easily and alot of stuff is held in with plastic clips.
on a similar note, does anyone have any advice where to buy these special little clips? for example the ones that all broke on me that hold the carpet to the bins?

You can get the plastic push pins at Autozone. Or at least you can get them at MY Autozone..

You know, I'm surprised no one has tried to just...'update' the maroon interiors. For example, when my friend had a maroon interior, his door panel fabric was turning pink. So we went to Wal-Mart...bought some faux-swede (black), some sheets of padding, and some spray adhesive and we completely re-worked the door panel. It actually looked really good. I think he'll eventually stroll across this thread and post pics..

You could do the doors like we did, maybe dye your red carpet black or get black carpet... get black seats, black cargo carpet and go for the two-tone look. Just my $0.02..

Unless you plan on cutting the old carpet, yes. It runs under the heater core behind the dash, so getting it out is a little bit of work.

Just did mine last weekend...

took me about 8 hours for a FULL interior swap. just have to know where the nuts and bolts are. the dash isnt really that hard to pull out, just trying not to break the fragile plastic pieces is the hard part.
