What in the world is a '91 coupe?

From the options list, it looks like mazda kinda just merged the GTU & GXL, but dumped all the manual stuff (windows, less- luxury highback seats, lower grade interior trim )

Looks like all 91's had the power windows/matching door panels & the "formerly known as a GXL" seats. Did they do this to try and sell more, or to "use up" their parts supply? Anyone know haha?

Anyway, I've never had a reason to know, but I'm buying my first non-80s '7 today, a 91 coupe.

Looks all stock to me under the hood, right? lol, probably going to revert back to EFI & fix the AC too. Most likely dropping the power rack for a manual one.

Both my girlfriend and I have turbo 2's, but its called "coupe" on the registration. Thank mazda for figuring out a clever way to save some people on insurance. Your car used to be a turbo 2 as well I believe, looking at the wheels and hood.

I own a 91 coupe! It didn't come with a/c from the factory or come with cruise control and doesn't have a rear wiper. Which I found odd. I have a set of the 5 spokes in mint condition, but they're my summers until I buy new ones.

Looks like it's originally an A package 91! However, someone's swapped in manual window regulators & just drilled thru the power door panels. lol. It also has a T2 hood & 88 T2 wheels as shown in the pictures. Need to find some true 91 5 spokes for it, & sell the hood!

Alright Landon now your just rubbing it in..... How do you keep finding these deals? I swear people just drive by your house and say I bet he will buy this. The fact that you have 4-5 Rx7's in yard have nothing to do with that of course.

I'd guess that coupes are more expensive to insure than hatchbacks.

The simple definition of a coupe is usually just a car with 2 doors. However IIRC the full definitions have a lot to do with the overall size/shape and proportions of the car. Good example is how a rx8 is considered a 4 door coupe rather than a sedan.

done.

just looks like a converted turbo to run n/a on the 4 port block, possibly blew the turbo and didn't want to dick with it anymore. USDM turbo cars were all coupes. nothing magical about your car, most of them aren't stock by any means any longer, the leather seats probably cracked and were replaced with cloth S4 GXL seats, S5 GXLs had leather seats as well..

OK, looks like you guys totally missed what I was asking. Lol.

I'm more so wondering if anyone knew the history of the FC well enough to explain why in '91, they dropped the GTU/GXL/TurboII name branding, and went to just "package A, package B, etc.



Per this, my car shows all the signs of being an A package car, originally. The turbo hood & wheels were put on there for show, as there's zero indication else where of it being blow thru. (holes cut for IC piping, holes inside for boost gauge/etc, the general "quality" of the work isn't that great, and plus in this part of the US, it's quite common to see FC's that are holley carb'd, just because the owner writes off learning about EFI as a "I'm too dumb to get this, just put a carb on & make power".

So, I'll bold out my question haha

Why did mazda, in 1991, drop all the cheezy names (GTU, GXL, T2, ) and change to A & B packages? I'd speculate it's because they were just trying to move them out in anticipation for the FD, but would like to know the reason, IF by some chance someone knows.

On a sort of different topic, I put a battery in the car & it started immediately, though had a fuel leak from the welch plug. I sealed that w/ some quick steel & drove her around for 20 miles (according to the trip meter) issue free! Definitely a good purchase. I'll throw some more pictures up soon for your viewing pleasures

i don't recall them dropping the designations in '91, but maybe i just haven't paid that close of attention to notice.

Tons of money to tune FI and electrical gremlins will make you appreciate a mechanical carburetor, even of it isn't your cup of tea. Amazing how people think that carburetors suck because they are phased out. I had a person tell me that my carbureted zx6r sucks because you can't wheelie with them. I laughed and explained to him that I picked up the front wheel maybe half mile back and dropped to pull into the parking lot.

everyone has their preference, i stick with FI because it is more efficient and easier to tune once you have it set up.

the FC came with fuel injection, but there are those who care to not learn something new.

i have never seen an explanation as to why the FC changed from the gtu/gxl scheme to the a and B package scheme.

my guess it was done to simplify things, as the miata used the same scheme. the protege was LX/DX, along with the MPV. the trucks are SE5 and LE

and i forget what the 626 was, it might be DX/LX/turbo in 1991

so as you can see moving the Rx7 to the A package B package really simplifies mazda's lineup in 1991

the FD is base, R1 and touring in 1992/1993, then in 1994 it becomes R2, base, popular equipment and touring.

Now that makes sense!!! Model wide changes.

Also- on the subject of carbs-- Nothing wrong w/ carbs, but this holley is juuuunk- the power valve is blown, or it's just far out of tune jet/venturi size wise, so I leave a crop dust style trail of unburned greyish mist, fuel mist.. hah.

Also, it leaked fuel (sure, so do the pulsation dampers), the instant I started it. I dunno, I just don't feel the holley carb is god's gift to fuel delivery.

depends on the size of the holley, most people slap them on with standard jetting and call it good. while it may run it will be pig rich, these are not V8 engines and the jetting needs to be dropped nearly 10 sizes on primary and secondary.
