What RX7 FC should I get?

OK What RX7 FC should I get?

I'm looking to hopefully get an RX7 FC soon. (If my new job goes through) And originally I wanted a Trubo II because I'm pretty sure they are the fastest. Correct me if I'm wrong. But I was wondering what model should I get and what do they and what are the differences between them all? Also if I don't get a Turbo II I can get an after market turbo right? Sorry this will be my second car. I'm sixteen also by the way so I'm still learning as much as I can about rotaries because I just think that they are amazing and I cant wait to get my RX7!

You need to ask yourself if you want power or reliability.?

N/A's seem to last longer than turbos
Turbo's make more power than NA's

Both cars can be fun. My FC is a turbo. My next one will be a 13b with a carb kit.

It's not that simple to just add a turbo to a non-turbo FC. You need to fabricate your own manifold using the TII manifold (you can read up on this on Aaroncakes website). Actually you can read up on the whole turboing an NA car on there, aha. The N/A transmission is known to be more fragile than the TII tranny and therefore would usually be swapped when making decent amounts of power, but then that would require new driveshaft, new diff, new rear axles and would be one step away from a TII swap(the engine). Then you'd most likely need an aftermarket ECU of some sort.

Basically you can get a TII from the start or get an NA and turbo it and risk damaging the engine if not done properly. I regret buying an N/A because I don't feel like it's powerful enough.

The N/A engine has six intake ports while the turbo only has four. The two extra ports on the N/A engine are for the aux actuators which allow more air in around 5500rpm I believe to make more power. So when you put the turbo manifold, you need to do what is shown on aarons write up and match up the manifold to the engine.

But if you wanna know most differences here a bunch of more detailed info on FC rx7's.

Get an NA. It better suits 16 year old economics, driving experience and mechanical maintenance schedule. Also, you'll get a much better looking NA compared to a turbo for the same price.

At your age, you can't afford the turbo I can promise you that. Get an NA, learn on that car, fix some things, save you pennies, then buy a turbo II when you're ready.

Another question. What is the gxl model? Is that the same as the n/a model?

Yes. Read the FAQ's in the 2nd gen Tech section, it lists everything all about that.

GXL, GTU, Sport, Base... Convertible... all NA. Unless it says TurboII, it's Normally Aspirated.

GX is the base N/A. Comes without a LSD and 4 lug wheels.
GXL is the higher trim N/A. Comes with a LSD and power windows.
GTU was a limited edition with no sun roof, the lightest of all FC's, highly sought after for Auto X.
Sport came with extra aero and options.
Convertibles are self explanatory.
Turbo II was the turbo verson.
10th Anniversary was a limited edition made in 88'. Came turbo with all white exterior and black leather interior.

Theres also the Series 4 and the Series 5.

Series 4 was from 86'-88' had black moldings, less aggressive aero, less flashy tail lights- Looks more 80's. N/A's made about 140 hp, turbos 200 hp.

Series 5 was from 89'-91' made paint matched moldings, more aggressive aero, more modern tail lights, interior was slightly updated (sliding seat belts were a big addition). N/A's made about 150 hp, turbos 210 hp.

I'll toss out another opinion in favor of the NA car. The flat TQ curve of the NA will teach you good habits as a driver because you can't fix mistakes as easily by planting the right foot into the firewall.

And the point of getting a better condition car for the same dollar spend is also very valid and worth considering given your age and probable economic circumstance.


Personally I've been reading through FAQ's for a few days, and there's a wealth of info there.

I've figured out is that in my situation, I don't care about it being Turbo, I don't care what kind of brakes it comes with, I want 5 lug, manual doors would be nice but unlikely to be on the same car, same issue on manual power steering, I have no interest in being picky on the kind of diff found in the car when I'll simply trade for an open and weld it. Eventually I'll translate that into models and trim levels.

Wish we got n/a rx7s in NZ so I could have an n/a for a daily and my gt-limited as my weekend warrior. The n/a would be awesome as a daily thrasher. On the street it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. If you know what I mean
