Mazda has spark ignited diesel [most likely turbo] rotaries they are testing right now. No word whether they will make it to production or not.

Good idea yes, you get the great gas mileage in a cool car, which is total gay. If I seen that car coming and then realized that car sounded like a canal boat, I'd laugh my *** off, part of the joy of the rx7 is the sound. Taking it away is just... wrong.

The Big Ugly!
Now piston swapped RX's are not my thing, but if it's done up right it's better than a non-running rotary. Sometimes you just have to appreciate the work envoled over other things. As to why, maybe he had a shell & that motor laying around & decided why not. Just to do something different or test his mechanical ability, which some people can't even change their own oil.

That's awesome. One day I will buy an FD shell and put a big Cummins or Powerstroke diesel in it, Allison transmission, solid Rockwell axel and then tow stuff....
The chassis in the video was probably off to the wreckers anyway, it might as well be used for something. And he can run veggie oil now...

GET OFF MY LAWN

He's a member here. Lives near me in the Tampa area. He pulled the engine after that drive and put it in something else. It was just too slow. I tried to buy the engine/adapter from him but he had the other plans already. In my head I could already smell the 'cooking french fries and chicken wings' odor my truck has from running biodiesel coming from an RX.
Do you guys realize you can get 400ftlbs of torque out of that TDi engine?

an inline cummins would have made the front so nose-heavy it'd be ridiculous. Giant cast-iron straight six up front? no thanks! I think the block of the cummins is taller than the front of the car, when the block is sitting on the ground.
the 2.0L TT diesel from the 123d, one of VW's latest turbodiesel 4's or honda's 2.2L TD engine though? those I could get behind

The first thing I thought of was the RX-7's gearing. Hes using an FC transmission and presumably the stock 4.10 rear end. That would be a mighty slow top speed with that diesel engine.

A late model 1.9 TDI VAG engine can do 240bhp and 400lbft+ on standard internals with no real issue, and that would go damn well in an FC to be honest.
Granted, that engine in his is a bit crappy, but dont count it out as its a diesel!

Looks like a beater to me. There is a rip in the roof, the paint doesn't match, the interior needs work and there are dents everywhere. Also, it presumably had a non-running engine. Hence, beater. Just because we love these cars doesn't mean that a $500 chassis holds value to anyone else...
