well im going to go pick up a 1990 s5 which is going for a steal with 110000 original KM's and mint body.

but i have a few questions, in the brochure it says 1990 Gxl's came with wrap around wing, colour coded mirrors and AAS.
It has none of those ...

i dont mind if it doesnt have any of these since im putting my own mirrors and sport wing on it....

so maybe im looking at a American brochure or am i getting shafted on a s5 ? everything else is where it is supposed to be.

It may not be a gxl. gxl's also had leather almost always. you probably have a base or a gtu. If it has a sunroof its not a base. if It does not you can pretty much bet its a gtu or base.

 

it has a sunroof, power mirrors, power windows, power locks? i believe? and the big gxl badge on the fender ... he didnt show any pictures of the front seats just the interior from the hatch forward.


its just odd to see it without the wrap around wing and painted mirrors ..

 

More than likely it's a GXL. The AAS could have removed for aftermarket shocks, because the AAS will only work with the original shocks. Throw your pictures up and let's see em~ My car's also a GXL and it doesn't have leather seats in it, I've got all red interior with a gold body~

About the only consistent things are:
*GXLs have power windows, sunroof and AAS [Unless aftermarket suspension like siikduke said]
*base models had single piston front brakes [and 4-lug on S4]
*T2s have LSD, aero mirrors, power windows
*GTUs 's have LSD

Otherwise Mazda seemed to just pick things out of a hat and throw them on the cars ^_-
I've seen plenty of base models with sunroofs, mine came with AC, etc

 

90% of the S5's in the USA have a sunroof, 80% have power windows, 100% have power mirrors. it seems like 99% have a rear wing.

you need to look at a couple of things to narrow it down more.

the GXL got different seats with a separate headrest, rear wiper, AAS, 4 piston brakes and a stereo with AM/FM/tape/EQ.

options are leather and a CD player

the S4 cars have some different options in canada, i don't know about S5

 

my S4 GXL doesn't have leather seats or a wing, but I have everything else. Was the GXL suppose to come with a spoiler? Because some GXL models (S4) came with the duck bill, a wing, or nothing.

 

first, the s4 options are different from the S5's. second we should be talking model years, they vary by model year.

in 86 and 87 the GXL is wingless. in 88 the color coded rear wing is an option.

the ONLY way to get the duckbill is to get a sport model or a turbo with the aero package, in 86 or 87

or put it on yourself

 

maybe the car is not a 1990, or it has had some parts replaced over the years

 

local car on craigslist was advertised as a 91, the car was so clearly a s4 BASE model, 4 lug wheels, s4 engine, moldings, tails

the interior was kind of pieced together, probably somehow got a s5 dash and title to go along with it because this guy was swearing to me the car was a 1991, no amount of me telling him the car was a 88 at best could convince this guy, his title said 1991. The guy was a car flipper because he always ran the same cheesy ads, so you never know

 

i didnt get it guys, guy said it was mint underneath, looked under passenger side rocker, put my hand in a hole there and it goes all the way back to the rear wheel from the front wheel.

 

Sounds like a good call on your part. Theres a lot of good info in this thread though.
