the "s" stands for "series. a s4 (series 4) was made from 1986 to 1988. a s5 (series 5) was made from 1989 to 1992.

Bingo! Also if you can't tell what year it is generally, and I say generally because it is interchangeable between series, the outer trim on an s4 has a square groove running along the middle and the s5 has a small groove along the bottom edge of the trim.

Where you at in Indiana?

OT: S4 has black trim and tail lights like your avatar. It also has manual seat belts.

Seatbelts and color matched trim are the easiest distinguishers

there are so many things that set the s4 and s5 apart...some people do S5 conversions on their S4 but the easiest and fastest way to tell (even if its a conversion) the S4 RPM goes to 8000 the S5 goes up to 9000

of course the front bumpers are diff. the mirrors are diff. taillights, side mouldings, but most importantly....the S5 have longer gears and a bit more power

Non-turbos: s4 goes to 7000rpm, s5 NA goes to 8000 for manual, 7500 for auto. I'm sure thats what Eddie meant.

88rota the info your looking for should be in the faq thread but a few of the main differences you can see are the coolant fill cap on the water pump neck on the s4 the s5 has it on the radiator instead of the engine. Also the s4 omp is mechanical so it would have a cable going to it in stead of wire like on the s5

You mean rod instead of cable, and the s4 rad goes out easy, so don't use the rad as a end all check cause I have an s5 metal rad in my s4
