RX7 Convertible 4-seater?

If I scrap the roof and the spare-tire from my 88 'vert, can I put in rear seats from a coupe?

I've never seen what's underneath the seats/bins in a coupe and just wonder if it can be done.

Shouldn't have to scrap the roof. It can be done, but you'll have to remove the spare tire mounting brace and perhaps relocate the headrest speaker amp. But as with the coup, you could only put short people back there. I'd play the Randy Newman song anytime someone gets back there and actually fits.

You could actually put the spare in the truck of the Vert as the well is still there.

interesting. You're right, I could put the spare tire in the trunk as well as the targa roof. The rest of the roof can retract and it "should" fit with two short people sitting where the spare tire should go...

hmmm...

I think the main structural cross brace behind the seats is taller in the convertible. No?

Actually, ya. I just noticed that. On a coupe, the sides beside the transmission tunnel go lower which would allow for more comfortable seating. On the vert, the brace is the same height all the way across.

I don’t think it will work without lots of modifications but I would say it could be done. The verts have less leg room in the front because the seats slide back and hit the chassis brace, which is going to suck for everyone if the car has rear seats. The rear seats are really small and pretty much pointless. I guess you could use it for a child safety seat, but I think it would be kind of irresponsible to have children in the back of a convertible rotary!

This all started cuz my wife mentioned that there's no where to put my kid if we ever just go for a drive. I guess I'll just have to buy another convertible that has 4 seats

I just see the whole raw fuel smell that comes from most rotaries being bad for babies!
