I picked up a GTUs and wanted to share pictures. I know they only made 100 of them and so pictures on the internet are scarce but I hope to see more pop up!
Such irrational anger over joe maddox for showing how to identify these models. It would be nice if this thread just stayed about the cars.
I have a bit of a fascination with rare fc models and appreciate these cars for their rarity. Not everyone is a fan because it lacks the turbo. However i also have a rare infini, 10th anniversary edition and a s5 turbo II. I dont need a turbo to appreciate rare.
If you have any pictures of your fc please share them if it's a gtus! Not many left! I just saw this one:
Can I put a 16" tire sticker on a base model and put on hard suspensions, large brakes, TII seats, and short rear end and have the same car?
that would be a felony to tamper with those stickers. I wouldn't recommend it. It's the same as swapping vins, only asking for trouble. Best to just search for a legit GTUs. 👌
I noticed all threads on the club agree that it's the door jam vehicle information that proves a model is a GTUs so I don't think we need anyone's opinion to prove it. It is nice to have a registry list like the 10ae registry list that requires the proof we all agree on that proves its a GTUs.

A felony, really? What legislation is the basis for that comment making it an absolute?
I would suggest tampering with vehicle identification stickers or vin numbers. I think we are all in agreement on how to verify a GTUs. I only see people mention the vehicle identification stickers. I would love to see members GTUs pictures. It's a cool piece of Mazda rotary history!
The red one is for sale for fifteen thousand dollars. The mileage is a bit high but the condition is hard to come by now days. This black one however just sold for just under five thousand.
Since this thread is active again, I'd like to point out that the quantity in the first post is wrong. it was my understanding that 1000 were made/sold in '89 and 100 in '90.
I'll try to get a current picture of mine. I have some on my phone just have to move them to the computer.
Dak, the misunderstanding you have about the numbers of the gtus is because of the post made by the creator of this website. In the early 2000s icemark responded to a post where a member had asked if there was a way to prove how many gtus models were made and what the stamped vin number was about. Icemark then quotes himself through another website he created and made a post making the claim he cited on his site here. He made a claim, cited himself as an outside source and it went from there.
However the mystery was laid to rest a few years back when a thread showed how they came to be and what the restamped rx7s were about.
the restamped model thread on The Mazda Forum explains whybits not gtus specific. The arguments were laid to rest and common sense has taken over. It is no longer the belief that there were 1100, it's clear there was only 100. Even this group in it's quest to find all of them and register them like the 10ae thread has failed to find even 100. While nearly all the 10ae models were found. There were only 100 made.
I like that today they are respected as the classic car, a rare model and a nice turbo light option. I find the groups on social media to have great pictures and posts from owners and fans!
I really wish I knew what happened to my GTUs. I sold it to someone on this forum around 2010-2011, but do not have any communications or documentation from it. From memory, I believe he flew out from Chicago to drive my GTUs in New Hampshire back out there to become a drift car. While mine was a longshot from a pristine example, it was setup as an SCCA autox car and was extremely fun to drive back then.
It was red and had a distinctive large dent in the passenger or driver rear quarter panel.
it's rather sad to think of how many of these cars got destroyed over the last 2 decades after being turned into drift missiles. from rather common to now having to scrounge to find decent usable parts.
I think the rarest of them all was the Arctic Silver option, I had only seen one in many thousands of RX7s. I have a set of factory option mud flaps in storage, also super rare but some people are delusional as i have seen them asking $1800 for the set. sorry but no one is going to pay that for a couple of pieces of EPDM molded rubber. i had considered making reproductions with the set but it costs a lot to get anyone to make runs of these things without shelling out thousands up front.
Automatic FCs are also quite rare, not that it is a desirable rarity, heh. In fact, I would have to guess less than 2% of all rotary cars were automatic until the RX8 came out where that figure drastically jumped to near 50%.
