Finally I got lucky!!

Hey guys- Been a member here since June 2005, I had an 87 SE RX-7 at the time. Anyway, when I had that I met some other rotary guys here locally. Well fast forward to the present, I've had since then sold the 87, bought & sold an 85 S and currently have a 83 GS. So one of my friends that I'd met back in 05, well it turns out his 2nd gen that he has, was no longer running, and going to be towed from it's parked location at an apartment. He told me if I came & grabbed it, it was mine!

So I rented a U-Haul trailer & drove up there & grabbed the car. It's an 88, SE model, with exhaust, headers (non-RB, not sure what). It's lowered on springs, has the stock wrap around raised spoiler, and has some aftermarket wheels. The car isn't in too terribly bad of shape, but doesn't start. Motor ran great last time, but someone has definitely been in and dicked with the wiring. So the non-starting issue is certainly electrical.

Anyway, just thought I'd share- I've seen so many other people brag about their lucky findings, so I was super happy that it finally happened to me. To top things off, I also scored a free T2 trans in the deal!

I'll post up some pictures soon

ya lol- He'd lent the car to some one who did some real shotty work- and I guess he drifted it into something. It's a little bent up there as you can see in the picture, but there are worse dents out there. Worse part is it's COVERED in surface rust right there from the paint flaking off.

I'm really hoping to get it running without a hitch, but if it turns out there's more problems than worth fixing I'll probably sell it. As it sits now, I can't get power to the starter, so it won't crank. Also, there's NO coolant, not even in the bottom radiator hose. I'm hoping it's not a coolant seal leak, and just a hose leak. The fact that the lower hose is empty leaves me thinking the engine is still ok. There also isn't any water in the oil, another plus haha.

But if all goes good, I'll just keep it around for a few years until I've got a good place to keep it & put some money into it, I'd really like for a peripheral port 13B NA to go into it! Yes I know, 2k+ idle, super low reliability, but come on, how much fun would that be!?

Damn I can't get this booger off my hand, no matter how hard I flick it. Eww, ok, I just flicked it so hard it hit me back in the face, the nose actually. How ironic. I think I should roll it around on my palm a few more times to dry it out. Flick. Win. I love it when I can hear it hit the wall.

Anyways dude, that is a nice car for free. As for the dent you can cut a peice from one from the junk yard and have it welded in.

hahah WuT!

Greg- yea kinda worried about the fuel system as well, I'll definitely post some stuff up as things progress. I think it has a fuel cut switch installed, typical flooding problem solution lol, so maybe I'll be lucky. Hopefully the gas isn't super old as well.

By your description i thought you got laid for the first time.

I was gonna say "congratulations, but wrong section".

Nice find. Time for a t2 swap, and ebay widebody rear, to take care of that dent?

You can pp it down the road.

How is the interior?

I had an 88 se given to me 3 or so years ago, definately a good feeling.

Car looks good.

rofl-- interior is OK- big tear in drivers seat, idiot cluster surround MIA, no radio, random plastic cracking (window trims, storage bins)

UPdate- We tried to push start the thing but the battery was dead, and it began to rain. I also checked the oil, very clean with no water in it, so I think it's fine in that aspect.

OK update!!! I vacumed out the interior all nice & pretty like (ok, not big of an update haha). We got a new battery, & dropped it in there. Still, not starting. So we got a drop light, and noticed the (-) clip to the starter, above the 2 studs w/ nuts on them, wasn't on there! So we just (we, being me & my m8 brian) clipped it on, & turned key... it cranked!!!

After some cranking, it lit up, but ran rough for about 3 seconds, definitely only firing on 1 rotor. We jumped it to my camry, which was running, so it could get a full 14.7V going into the electrical system of the FC. Cranked it up a second time, only to have another 3 second run time, that was rough. So I pulled the EGI fuse, cranked it 5 times for about 5 seconds each time, and then put the fuse back in... I'll be damned, it lit up this time, and went up to the 3K warm up!!!!! Haha I was so excited..

I let it run about 20 seconds, knowing the cooling system was dead empty.. then shut it down. Filled with coolant & water (Good news, the exhaust had no signs or smell of coolant in it, so the motor is good) I then lit it back up, & drove it to the gas station, to top of the tank with fresh fuel.

Super sketchy drive, the master is completely shot (I thought RX-7 hydraulics were good? haha this will be the 3rd master I've done of the 4 rx-7's I've owned.. not counting clutch masters or slaves....) So I e-braked it the whole way there, definitely keeping the speeds to a minimum.

But she ran great, sounded awesome to hear the ol' 13B lite up for the first time, & especially get to drive.. Couldn't ask for a better birthday present (11.24 to be exact)

Will post new pictures soon!

So I got the car driving, even insured it for a few days, but the coolant's blowing out of the overflow at a fast rate... Coolant O-ring is shot =(. Hoping to do an S5 N/A swap soon, but here are some new pictures atleast!
