What is 9/10 of a cent worth?
So the gas companies take an extra 9/10 of a cent for every gallon of gas we buy--what is that actually worth?

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), "prime suppliers" of "motor gasoline" reported sales of 372,833.5 thousand barrels sold in February 2007. Each barrel represents 42 gallons, and to determine the value of 9/10 of a cent for each gallon, we did the following calculation:

372,834 x 1000 x 42 x .009 = $140,931,063

That means that in February 2007, gas companies collected an extra $141 million USD because of their unique pricing practices. Assuming Februrary is a rough average for the year, that's $1.7 billion USD in additional revenue!

above from
3.http://www.wisegeek.com/why-do-gas-p...-of-a-cent.htm

You guys will argue anything without researching.
OK so, since the gas companies aren't absolute morons, if legistlation passes that says they can't price at .009, obviously they will realize that it is a lot closer to round that cent UP instead of down.

372,834 x 1000 x 42 x .001 = $15,659,028 new money in their pockets!

Thank you, rocket scientist!

Well I never said that they don't get the 9/10. They take it and they love the extra cash. But they do not steal the extra 1/10. Also, Followthislogic is correct, gas co. will eventually round up if they can no longer charge 9/10 of a gallon, then they be getting that 9/10 we're whining about and also the extra 1/10. May not be a lot to each of us individually, but as a whole it makes a dent.

I dont see why you dont understand. Its simple. You buy 1 gallon for 3.099, then you pay 3.10 since they cant give you 1/10th of a penny. So, they arnt stealing the 1/10th, their just taking it. Its not so much their getting 9/10ths, its that Im missing my 1/10th. Read the links.

As far as the rounding up after legislation, well yeah no ****.

3.62 for 91 octane. I usually tell them I need 55 dollars in gas. I'll go in for change if there is any. Gas is a bitch right now.

It is simple. When you buy 10 gallons at 2.999, its 10 x 2.999. That comes out to $29.99. They don't make it $30.00 because they round up the price per gallon to 3.00/gal. The price per gallon is multiplied by the total gallons, then rounded. Sometimes there is no difference between the two methods, but any precision science or math experiment (incl. liquid measurement) requires that rounding is only done at the end of the process, not during. You're only partially right, sometimes you lose the extra 1/10 per gallon, but thats on the total bill, not per gallon. This all seems pointless to argue, but nevertheless, the NYS Assembly PROPOSED bill only aims to end the 9/10ths pricing as a market ploy and does not allege that they outright take money that they aren't entitled to.

My s4 (1986-1988) fuel light goes off at about 12.5-13 gallons, so unless your fuel light is screwy or unless you put it off for a long time, you might be getting screwed. Just compare how many miles per gallon you got compared to the last time you filled up. If both were city or both were freeway, and you lost more than 3-4mpg, there's a pretty good chance they're screwing u.

Your right, if you get 10 gallons you get 10/10, and they take nothing, however unless you get gas in increments of 10 gallons, they take that 1/10th per gallon. If you read back, I stated the 10 gallon increment in an earlier reply, on this thread. I am right about this plain and simple. 100%. I got gas directly after I posted the links, and got 4 gallons @ 3.049, Prepaid 12.20 which would be the price of 3.49 rounded up to 3.50, and waited to see what result the gallons would read on the pump. 4.001 gallons. There was an 1/1000 gallon increase, but that does not cover the 4/10th's they took.

I have a gas receipt in front of me. 17.402 gallons at a price of 3.319 per gallon. On a calculator I got 57.757238 which obviously rounds to 57.76, which is the amount I paid. I would not whine about the poor 0.002762 that gets lost to the oh-so-evil gas company.

Are you trying to say that rounding up should be illegal, all rounding should be down? I guess you don't have any 401(k) or IRA that gains interest.

Assuming that the rounding is only up when you get above .005 (as with most rounding) it stands to reason that every time it is between .0001 and .0049, you win, and whenever it's between .0050 and .0099 they win........ dead-even odds. It's a wash.

Even if they always round up, I mean from .0001 to .0099, the average you will lose per fill is .005..... let's say I average 6 tanks a month, for the next 50 years..... I'm losing a whopping $18.00!!! Those BASTARDS!!!!

No, your over complicating the issue. The whole idea is that its wrong to charge 9/10 of a penny, an amount smaller than our least valuable currency. Whether they round up or down, I dont care. Am I bitching about it? no. It was a little humor based tid bit of information roughly related to the original topic, geared at anyone who had never thought about it. I didnt think I would have to spend so much time explaining the intracasies of my logic. Done.

I pay 106.9 CDN per liter, thats high as hell...but considering what you guys are payin its cheap. Anyways, gasoline nowadays comes with a 10% ethanol mixture. Most of you will know that the ethanol destroys the water molecules in the gas. Thats why If your running short track and its against the rules to run alcohol in your fuel, they put water inside and if the water floats then its legal...if it disappears your screwed!

Other than that gasoline is volume adjusted to 15'C, because when gasoline gets hotter its volume increases. But, the mass doesn't thats what counts. Don't believe me? Fill a jerry can half way, mark it with a marker and put it in a really hot garage..the volume will raise, put it back in the cold and it will get to normal.

Oh well, I see your points and I can see where buying off the whole 10 gal results in losing the extra 1/10. I missed the previous 10 gal comment before me, sorry. They do only round up at the end, but at the same time, my argument is really a moot point since it comes out to a per gal increase per gallon of 1/10% when you pay.

Also a good point about the $18. It still seems shitty that the wealthiest companies in the world are taking my $$$, but if I was that concerned, I'd drive a Prius.

Oh yeah, it would be quite hypocritical to bitch about gas and drive an rx7. Thats why I also have a 34mpg Saturn. And yeah, despite the sarcasm, Followthislogic's 18 dollar point was valid. 18 Dollars in my lifetime is nothing, but add everyone else and thats a lot of "Extra Revenue".

If they did that with Food, people would ****.
