Can It Be?? I NEED YOUR HELP!
Hey there,
Well i recently picked up a Rx7.My car is a 1990 Rx7 GTUs,Brilliant Black in color. Ive been doing research on this car becuase its such in great shape.Well ive heard and read on this forum and on some post that only 100 GTUs were produced in 1990.and about 10 in black.I have the VIN of the car and i broke it down to configure it and it actually comes out to match the coding on the vehicle. The car has no sunoof,no power windows,no power locks,no rear wiper and it has the automatic seatbelts. My car currently has about 68,000 miles on it. Is there a way to verify the car? i called Mazda in Irvine and they dont seem to know anything regarding if this car is 1 of 100. Heres a pic of the car.........
Can any one please help,is there anyway i can tell this car is 1 of 10 or 1 of 100?
Well any help will do,Thanks.

well you won't find much info on it.
There is a thread about the Vins numbers being crossed out and such.
~1400 were made in 89 and 100 rolled off the assembly line before mazda stopped production. You'll find 3 types of GTUs' out there.
89 GTUs
89 GTUs resold as a 90 (we're trying to figure out if the crossed out vin #s are the 89's, resold as 90s)
100 real 90 GTUs ( mint vin #s)
BTW, your thread title SUCKS!

Does this shed a light on the actual numbers????
Only problem: the Vert was the only FC to come with airbags.

Also new for 1988 was the SE name (which meant base model), while the GXL remained the luxury version with all the toys like power windows, cruise control and sunroof.
Major changes came in 1989 with the introduction of another new model and some technical changes. The GTU became the base model, while the new GTUs became essentially a turbo version without the turbo. This no-nonsense machine had the suspension and all the performance goodies without all the luxuries that added weight. It even had a 4.30:1 rear end (compared tot he standard 4.10:1 unit). Apparently not many people (other than us) thought this was cool idea, as only about 100 were built.
Higher compression, lighter rotors and revised intake manifolds boosted horsepower in both normally aspirated (160hp, up from 146) and turbo forms (200hp, up from 182). The turbo version also had a revised turbo charger.
In 1990, there were no real changes, except the convertible got an airbag. In 1991, the last year for these great cars, the model lineup was simplified to coupe, convertible and turbo. All the cars were extensively optioned, so there was no more base model.

A notable exception to the above rule is the GTUs. Although very few were built, Mark Schuler of Tri-Point feels that this would be the ultimate non-turbo second-generation cars to own with its light weight, turbo chassis and later high-compression engine.

I think that's the rare one. one hundred 1990 GTUs's made, and 10 of them were black. Even if that's one of them, your problem is that it'll only mean something to you and possibly a few select others. Selling an N/A FC for more than $3,000 is a stretch in itself. That milage and what looks like good condition helps, but unless a potential buyer knows what it is, cares, and is willing to dishout profitable money, I say drive around happily knowing you have what you have. The no sunroof is a huge plus, the fact that it is the 5 lug, 16 by 7 wheels, LSD, and TII suspension also helps. also, check a TIIs carpeting and compare it with yours. Yours should be thinner. the 1990 GTUs with no sunroof was the lightest US spec FC ever made. They make awesome track cars.
