89 GTU back to life after 15 years
89 GTU back to life after 15 years
About 6 months ago I bought a 89 GTU all stock so NA s5. It hadn’t ran in 15-20 years but a few days ago it started after I redid a lot of electrical work, redid the whole fuel system, basic cleaning and all that good stuff. The main problem was the injectors were entirely clogged and only one secondary was firing🙃.
Starting it up looks like this: turn the key, cranks 2-5 times and fires to life. It revs to about 3k rpm and dies instantly. Pressing the gas does nothing to change it. Putting it in first gear and holding the clutch does nothing to change that. Tripping the fuel check connector doesn’t do anything either. The only thing that will change it is if I prop open the AFM. I can get 3 or 4 rev cycles out of it before it dies. The thing is, the AFM is within spec of the FSM so I am thinking that I should get a new AFM but why would it be bad if it is still within spec?
If you guys have any other ideas I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!!

My 86 N/A sat for some time and was hard to start and keep running. . . Once I changed the water temp sensor behind the alternator, the car started much better and ran better. .. . . .I was amazed at the difference..
Check timing on the CAS? May be off. Just had this happen to my friend on a fresh engine rebuild with the same symptoms.
check for vacuum leaks. Sitting for that long never leads to good condition rubber.
