Question Changed the AFM......now what?

Ok. I have a problem with my 87 GXL Not being able to run above 2000 rpm when in gear. It kind of putters along and will die if i try to give it some gas. It idles fine and revs fine so I dont think its the fuel injectors. The consensus on here was that the AFM was bad. Well i got an AFM and changed it........nothing changed about the car. I was thinking that it might be the catalytic converter. Is the clogging of the cats common? If not then please tell me any other suggestions? Im having withdrawal!

yes the cats are clogged on lots of peoples cars... you might also check into a fuel filter.. if that is clogged then it gives the same symptoms as you described plus leans out the motor... where did you get the AFM.... when mine broke i replaced it with one from O'rielys auto parts and for the next two weeks it did this... on a hunch i bought another AFM from santiago on the board ... BAM all my problems went away... i went up to O'rielys and gave them a piece of my mind and told them if they sell rebuilt **** it better be rebuilt... not just stamped rebuilt

good luck

Clean that baby out with a long 1/2" extension and a hammer, lol...If you still have the stock exhaust, your precat probably **** the bed and clogged your second cat...

Check your fuel pump inlet filter, too...

If you knew how to read the components' inputs at the ECU, you wouldn't have changed the AFM for nothing...

If the problem seems to be getting progressively worse, or if you've dumped something in the gas tank that usually isn't there (injector cleaner, started premixing, etc), check that pump filter first...

Just throwing parts at the car isn't the smartest or most economical way to fix it. Try pulling codes from the ECU and see if that gives you any info...it sounds like the car is in limp mode.
