i have a 90' tII box in the garage but i am trying to shorten
my gear pattern cheapy as possable sence i am under 250 hp
i thought the miata gears would be ok i guess theres only one
way to find out

 

id say go for it, unless you plan on drag racing, in which case the tall 1st gear wont help at all

 

Bad idea.
The turbo FC trans runs wider / stronger gears.
They are not swappable.

Running a non-turbo FC (or Miata) transmission on an FC turbo is just plain stupid.

the tII box is just a spare i am using the 88' n/a box or the 90' n/a
box depending on witch one needs a rebuild more man i have too much
stuff in my garage

 

is the motor turboed?

 

no ported n/a no dyno numbers yet so i don't know what it makes
i am expecting 190-225 to the wheels with all the time in this motor
it should have no problem getting there

Just wanted to know how that transmission is holding up. There are claims in the 1st gen section that people have trashed the Miata tranny with stock ported 12A engines and minor bolt on mods.

I just got a 1999 Miata transmission the other day. It's stinking up the back of my SUV.

 

So far, the tranny has held up really well under abusive conditions. Shifting is still smooth, not one issue to report, and I beat on it quite a bit when I drive.
The motor is a stock ported 13B with minor power mods (intake, exhaust, etc).
Still as good as the day I dropped it in there

 

While this is being brought back up...

Are there synchro differences between the two transmissions? As in, are the miata ones better, or are they essentially the same as the FC?

 

The 1.8 Miata transmissions (1994+) have better syncros on one or more gears AFAIK. I don't know about the FC vs. Miata differences though.

 

I think all Mazda transmissions across the board got that update at that time.

 

So when doing this project, you would want to use parts from a 94-98 transmission?

 

1994-1997. No Miatas produced in 1998.

1999-2004 has a different shifter that shouldn't matter since you're changing the tailshaft housing anyway.

 

once again another from the dead bump. I am picking up a miata trans to do this. As far as the internals go what exactly from the 7 trans do you use and what from the miata trans do you use?

 

I would suggest calling Mazdatrix for more info. They were the ones that installed the miata tranny. Good luck!

Alright, so it looks like I'm going to be installing the Miata gears\tranny in my GTUs.
I found an 01 trans with <12,000miles on it. I called up Mazdatrix and They said the best years to use are 01' and 03' and they mill the input shafts for $90! Just gotta wait a little bit, the trans is in florida and I'm in VA. It's supposed to be delivered next friday unless the deal goes bad this weekend.
I will make a new thread when the time comes.
Pele will also be participating in this fiasco.

 

Molotov and myself have 2005 and 2003 Miata transmissions respectively. (My thought that it was a 99 was wrong...)

Problem:
When dismantling the trans, how do you get the input shaft off?

1.) Input shaft snout removed
2.) Bellhousing and tailshaft housings separated from the main support plate leaving the entire geartrain there...

how the hell do you get the guts of one in the other? I have a spare s5 na tranny laying around and need to put the guts into the miata tranny but cannot manage to swap the cases...

 

if i'm not mistaken, you dont swap the cases, just the actual "guts" from one to the other. the miata input/1st gear is all one part (kinda), you have to mill a secton of the splines off to have it fit the NA FC clutch "location".

 

ok with that being said how do you get the guts out? And I am doing this backwards, I am putting the fc gears into the miata box so the input shaft should be fine.
