Its cool seeing this thread. My cars been at a friends house for like 3 months getting worked on, and Thinking about it, i almost got the swap done to be considered a TII except the most important part. I have the TII Drivetrain, Posi Rear end, Front end, Flywheel, Driveshaft all swapped into my car. My NA engine is 6,000 miles old, when it goes, id like most definetly to get a TII motor, but i probably got a good amount of time before that happens. For people who want to convert to a TII I definetly recommend it, you can usually find the parts very cheap (I paid 350 for the tranney, rear end, front end, drive shaft). If you can find someone reliable to do the work and charge you fair prices it shouldnt be to bad. Dont get discouraged.

i did a swap because someone racked my T2 so i put everything on my na daily driver and now i have a weekend car and a $400 daily driver....wish i still have 2 7's...

MY question is this, will this kind of transplant pass smog in California? Would it pass with JDM parts, such as engine and ecu? If it doesn't pass what would be needed for it to pass.

Its a major question in my part because I live in Cali and I am using JDM parts.

I had my 90 GXL converted to turbo completely. it took me almost 2 1/2 year to collect all part I need:
90 j-spec motor/tranny(of course, it has turbo flywheel, counterweight already, complete long block)
90 turbo harness
N370 ecu
N370 boost sensor
turbo driveshaft
turbo rear end(complete with halfshafts, everything, except wheels, even brake assembly)
greedy boost gauge
greedy EGT
greedy turbo timer
HKS BOV
HKS super magaflow intake

this is all you need. about 10 weekends work for 2 people on and off.

it wasn't easy, but finally done in last summer. in deed, I save bunch insurance money. hehe

now, the car is for sale cuz bought a house. too bad.

CA law states for motor swap same year or newer. This applies to any motor in any car so if you have a 90 miata and you put in a 90 TII motor as long as all the smog equipment was in and it was done to factory specs it will pass smog. But you would have to go to a ref. But when it comes to puting in a turbo motor in a N/A car you might not have to see a ref because the Mazda RX-7 came with a turbo model. But I am not sure. So either way you might have to take a visit to the ref. But you are not suposto use JDM parts but I doubt they would notice.
